Polio Hope Rises In Virginia As Vaccination Edges Down
Richmond a State Health Department official predicts this summer's Salk polio vaccination push will curb infantile paralysis. Dr Maron Romaine notes Virginia's polio toll for 1956 is 12, far below 1955, with a third of 123 cases involving unvaccinated eligible children. Vaccination reduces exposure, he says, and 35 percent of Virginians up to age 19 and pregnant women have had at least one shot. If 50 to 75 percent of eligible groups are inoculated, epidemic risk drops significantly.
