Virginians lose money from nitrogen lacking in corn

Virginia corn suffers nitrogen starvation shown as yellowing and firing. VPI agronomist W. W. Lewis says side-dressing with nitrogen between now and August can lift yields by 15 to 20 bushels per acre, boosting statewide production by over 15 million bushels on about 1 million acres. Cost of nitrogen is outweighed by higher returns, with 2 pounds costing under 30 cents yielding a bushel worth 1.50 to 1.75 dollars. Large scale adds eight bushels per 100 pounds of nitrogen, about 12 to 14 dollars per acre.
