Miss Helen Fugitt of Sacred Heart school unit Winchester was selected by the youth as diocesan minstrel at the Virginia Catholic Students Mission Crusade state convention in Norfolk. Charles Joseph Lillis, winner of the Martinsburg Deanery oratorical contest, competed in the state finals. No state winner report yet. Ella Easley Fined $10 For Driving Without Permit

Ella Easley colored was found guilty of operating a car without a driver’s permit and fined $10 plus costs by Trial Justice A. J. Tavenger. Involuntary manslaughter charge was dismissed after testimony that another car sideswiped her vehicle causing a rollover that killed Clarence Robinson colored of Stephens City at Memorial Hospital.

Job-Finding Committee Seeks Steady Work Absorption

The Job-Finding Committee met in City Hall to promote Governor Perry's plan to reduce relief rolls by placing workers in regular employment. Members urged publicizing the program and reporting leads to the National Re-Employment office via Walter Shade or the local relief office via Miss Helen C. Shockey. Mutiny at Kansas Penitentiary Coal Mine Ends After 21 Hours

A 21 hour mutiny by 347 convicts at the Kansas penitentiary coal mine ended without injuries. Convicts threatened to tear up the mine unless food and a new prison physician were provided. Hostages included pit boss Nathan Van Meter and the guard team. Evacuation of the 730 foot mine was completed in 35 minutes with minimal damage and all 19 mules unharmed.

Heat Breaks With Sudden Temperature Drop

A foretaste of summer was interrupted by bans that kept up through the night causing a maximum 35 degree drop.
