A Lynchburg survey from 1917 showed 809 carloads of produce entered the market in 1915, much of which could have been grown locally. The forthcoming public market aims to boost local production and shorten marketing channels, with a year expected to remedy much of the import dependence. Local shoppers would benefit from fresh, affordable goods and consistent supply.
Reports from Sabens Texas indicate quiet along the border with no Villa activity near the island or Guadalupe where seventy Villistas were seen yesterday. Additional troops were deployed from Sabens to Fort Bliss and along the river to prevent raids, with an airplane patrol established.
Chicago reports on the ninth day of the telegraphers strike with both sides claiming progress toward victory. Union officials hope the AFL decision at Atlantic City will decide whether aid is extended to striking keymen. S J Konenkamp, president of the commercial union, says 1500 telegraphers in the brokers branch are urged to vote on striking in sympathy with commercial telegraphers.

William H. Taft testified at a Federal Electric Railway Commission hearing that discouraged public utilities face depressed finances due to wage increases higher material costs and similar circumstances. He stressed the financial strain on companies providing electric railway service.
Chicago announces start of an eight hour mail service between New York and Chicago. The first mail departs New York at 5 a.m. and reaches Chicago at 1 p.m. The return trip leaves Chicago at 6 a.m. and arrives in New York at 2 p.m. The schedule saves one business day.
Harrisburg June 19 The Pennsylvania Senate today passed 31 House measures, where they will be acted on before adjournment of the Legislature next Thursday.
Five transports carrying 16 925 troops arrived in New York from Brest and St Nazaire. The Prinz Frederick William brought 3 622 men, the Panaman 2 167, the South Bend 2 270, the Kaiserin Augustina Victoria 5 846, and the Great Northern 3 368, sailing from Brest and Bordeaux.
Washington today reported the daylight saving law repeal appears certain after Senate and House action. The Senate and House passed the measure with the conference to follow, expected to approve the House version and omit the agricultural rider.
Toledo Ohio June 19 Fifty four scheduled rounds of boxing will precede the twelve rounds in the heavy weight contest between Jess Willard and Jack Dempsey on July 4. Manager Thatcher of the Toledo Athletic Club announced a schedule for three bouts of eight rounds and three of ten rounds. The first match will start at 10 o'clock, an hour after the arena opens, with boxing continuing almost without pause until the main event.
Atlantic City June 19 The American Federation of Labor passes a resolution condemning alleged usurpations by the judiciary. It urges labor organizers to ignore court injunctions seen as violating constitutional rights and calls for impeachment of judges who exceeded authority.
The House judiciary committee agreed to vote Saturday on a proposal by Representative Gard Ohio Democrat to authorize the President by proclamation to modify the war time prohibition law concerning manufacture and sale of beer and light wines.
A Maryland man and Miss Claudia M Walter, daughter of John W Walter formerly of Middletown, were joined in marriage. The groom, age 30, is the son of L A Ham mont of Washington county.
Thomas Miller Carper aged 51 died at 9 at his sister-in-law Mrs. Lee W. Carper’s home after a complex illness. Survived by four sisters Ada Cleevager Louis Dix Martha Cadwallader and Margaret Ritter. He was cousin to Robert Carper who died last Monday and second cousin to J Ford Carper drowned two weeks ago. Funeral set for 2 PM Friday at Mrs. Lee W. Carper’s home.
The Garber Manufacturing Company plans an opening on Friday June 20 at the corner of Kent and Piccadilly Streets opposite the B and O depot. The venue will serve homes parties lawn fetes and picnics in any quantity.

The House, after reconsidering the six month extension of government fixed rates, passed the amended Senate bill to return telegraph and telephone lines to private control and repeal the law that allowed government seizure by the President.

Funeral services for the late Mr George Ritchie, who died last Sunday while visiting relatives in Cumberland Maryland, were held this morning at Market Street Methodist Episcopal Church. The Rev H G Spencer officiated as mourners included friends, neighbors, and relatives from Cumberland and Washington DC. Burial followed at the National Cemetery per his Civil War service in a Pennsylvania regiment. pallbearers named.
The Children’s Home Society of Virginia seeks 150000 to build an additional Richmond home and cover pressing needs. Winchester and Frederick county leaders support the campaign, with offerings to be received next Sunday June 22 in city and county churches. The society is inter denominational and receives no state funding.
