Steady rain revived parched ground across the Shenandoah Valley boosting corn gardens and pastures after a prolonged dry spell. Farmers hailed the moisture as like putting money in a bank as gardens and hay crops begin to recover and wheat harvest proceeds with improved heads and reduced straw.
A Old Salem Baptist Church home-coming is planned for Sunday June 22 with services at 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. The event is a family reunion with picnic dinners. Elders H. M. Flynn from Washington DC and Yates, Rust Thompson, and Louis Hudson from Fairfax VA are expected to speak.
The Union Sunday School Picnic Association will meet tomorrow evening in the People's Bank building in Stephens City. Committee members and school superintendents are urged to attend to receive progress reports on preparations for the annual picnic at Kline's Woods, Valley on August 14.
A dance event is announced at Opequon Lake Park for Wednesday night June 18. Local residents are invited to attend the social gathering and enjoy music and dancing in the park pavilion.
The Baltimore Pastors School of Bible study and church work will run June 23 to July 4 at Randolph Macon Academy Front Royal Va Bishop Beauchamp and Dr Thomas Carter will speak at the third session with other leaders directing courses in rural and city work missions and Bible study A diploma will be awarded after completing twelve units with nightly social hours and a planned recreational program including swimming hiking and trips to the Shenandoah River.
A Schoarsch dispatch from near Fagarasch Translyvania reports three peasants killed and six fatally injured when lightning struck the bell tower during a storm as a crowd knelt in prayer. The church caught fire and many others were burned.
Robert W. Ayres a former worker at Western Maryland Medical School was sentenced to three years in the penitentiary for stealing more than $5,000 from the school. He claimed at trial that burglars took the money. Ayres was once connected with Kent county and originally from the Eastern Shore.
A garden fundraiser called Yard Party at Ridgeway School Lawn on June 20 promises good eats and a community event. Winchester Steam Laundry promotes prompt delivery and lists contact numbers 28 and 29 for services.
Rear Admiral Richard E. Byrd returns from sixteen months in the Antarctic to a city parade and formal reception in New York. Gov Pollard, Virginians, and a 3,000-strong guard lead a harbor salutes, Broadway procession, and city medals.

Judge Philip Williams handed down three divorce decrees at the recent term of the Corporation Court. One absolute divorce and two partial decrees were issued. An absolute divorce granted TN and Y Lewis N included custody of their infant daughter Anne Barton with the father and a six month nonremarrying period. Mrs Barton is a Pennsylvania native and non resident of the state. The couples married June 17 1922. Partial decrees were issued in the cases of Mrs Virginia Gillerin v William J Gillerin and Mrs Eloise S Hawkins v Harry E Hawkins, with the former placed on the docket for future final action and both noting grounds of desertion. The Gillerins wed September 20 1922 and deserted August 1 1929. the Hawkinses wed November 4 1923 and deserted January 28 1930.
Willie Nesmoth an alleged Chicago gangster stood trial in Baltimore under heavy guard for participation in the $47 000 payroll robbery of the Henry Sonneborn Company. Howard Gugel the first witness could not identify him. The trial was delayed by a juror’s heart attack while a hat found in the bandits car was offered as evidence.
William A. Brock and Edward F. Schlee arrived in Jacksonville after a 13 hour 54 minute 30 second flight from San Diego setting a new transcontinental record. They plan a 24 to 30 hour round trip back to Jacksonville. The pair flew 2 112 miles beating prior records and noted timing by Rockwell Field officials.
Handley High School Band and Drum Corps will rehearse at the school auditorium Thursday night from 8 to 9 for a Sunday service at Haig Stadium. Prof. W H McIlwee urges all current and recent graduates to attend for the Rear Admiral Michard Evelyn Byrd event.
The White House signaled strong support for Dwight W. Morrow as the next U S senator from New Jersey. In Newark Morrow led the Republican primary with a 267000 vote plurality, defeating Fort Frelinghuysen and Kelly across 21 counties as prohibition remained a campaign issue.
New York June 18 deflation resumed in the speculative market as share prices shrank rapidly under feverish liquidation. Exchange facilities were overpowered and the ticker lagged behind. The closing was heavy with about 2,250,000 shares traded and call money at 2 percent. Mrs W B Hough and daughter Barbara Ann returned from a visit to Hebron Indiana from the Marsdens.

Mrs Florence Willis was fined $20 and costs for failing to connect eleven properties to the sewer in this city. Her son Carroll Willis represented her and appealed to the Corporation Court, set for July 21, arguing the ordinance may be unconstitutional. The case follows a city survey ordered April 11 to enforce sewer connections and address complaints over dry closets.
Washington June 18 A Congressional Record report by Inspector General Drum concludes no evidence supports claims of payments to athletes or that half the West Point football team had prior college experience. Secretary Hurley endorses the findings as Army rules and controversy over academy sports are debated in Congress.
Rear Admiral Byrd is due in New York tomorrow after a two year Antarctic voyage. Winchester honors him with a satin silver bowl crafted by Samuel Kirk and Sons to be presented Sunday at 4 PM during thanksgiving services at Handley Stadium.
George W. Hoffman, great chief of records for the Maryland Improved Order of Red Men, is held in Baltimore on charges of larceny totaling 3133 from the organization. Witnesses accuse him of admitting guilt. Hoffman pleads not guilty and seeks a postponement for a hearing.
The piano students of Miss Jessie Markwood will perform a program in Braddock Street Methodist Church South Sunday evening at o'clock. The public is invited.
Mrs Taylor Rudolph, who underwent a major operation at Memorial Hospital some time ago, is now recuperating at the home of her father, Mr Henry Seon in South Braddock.
