In Soissons France 43 people died and about 500 were injured when two Paris to Laon trains derailed in a rock filled tunnel during repairs. Rescue workers freed roughly 10 more trapped passengers as debris was sifted and cars were crushed under the tunnel roof.
The United States deactivated its last infantry brigade in South Vietnam, the 3rd Brigade of the 1st Air Cavalry Division, cutting American ground combat forces by about 2,590. Air and naval strikes continued against North Vietnam as troop strength aims to reach about 49,000.
Richmond AP report says Joseph T. Fitzpatrick, elected chairman of the liberal state Democratic party, doubts any loyal Democrats will leave the party amid clashes with former top members. He cites continued loyalty while former Gov Godwin and others defect or criticize leadership. Fitzpatrick predicts a grass roots party and notes Battle plans to stay in the party.
President Nixon may back a compromise welfare reform plan to lift Social Security checks for millions of voters ahead of the election. He met Friday with Health, Education and Welfare Secretary Elliot Richardson and Labor Secretary James Hodgson, with Richardson urging movement toward a deal.
