Winchester adopts a 1.8 million dollar budget for the new fiscal year in a 11 to 1 vote by the City Council. Councilman H W Butler Jr casts the dissent and issues a written statement criticizing the budget.
The city council deferred action on the location of a national guard organization area and weighed a Winchester taxi fare hike from 35 to 45 cents while keeping the three-person rate at 50 cents. They unanimously approved life insurance for city workers, set four-year planning terms, and advanced two budget ordinances as part of a balanced annual budget of 1,958,004 with no tax increase.
Sam elected to Front Royal Town Council while his brother Charles is reelected to Winchester Council. They are Handley graduates who enlisted with three brothers in 1942. A wandering tourist on Braddock Street prompts a local incident as traffic aids him. Poet Luther Markin seeks poem exchanges via RD 2 Stroadsburg. He praised Filipino nationalism as a force for stronger US ties and warned communist leaders fear constructive nationalism as a mortal foe as they push propaganda pressures.
Incumbents retained their seats in Middletown's town election with Mayor Gene T. Dicks winning a second term by 45 votes. Council members D. K. Muntzing and Mrs. Hollis Coffelt also received 45 votes. Hann trailed with 14 write-in votes. others listed include Carl Baker Robert Green Mrs Thelma Bowman and Mead votes. Election officials reported turnout around 50.
Incumbents in Stephens City defeated a write-in slate led by Kenneth Mowery and candidates including Julian Grégory and Thomas Horne. Mayor Lynn H. Comer and incumbents Fred W. Cline Maurice Lemley Arthur Martin Garland Strickler won re election. other first time runners included Stanley Bennett Norman W. Bean. Comer urged citizens to attend council meetings.
Incumbent J Ben Cather William M Battaile and Marvin E Gore were elected to the first ward council seats with Riley defeated. Mayor Claude B Smalls Jr reelected for a four year term. Zuckerman Henkel and Butler won second ward seats with no opposition.
Three masked gunmen robbed two service stations near Fairfax. One suspect forced a motorist to drive to Arlington. another was tracked by a police dog hours later. Seventy five officers and three dogs searched a Fairfax County estate woods for a third man. Police said two of the men participated.
Manila dispatch reports riots in Tokyo as students storm parliament during a month long anti Kishi campaign linked to the defense treaty. Premier Kishi calls a midnight cabinet session amid insurrection fears as Eisenhower prepares to visit Tokyo. A U S Marine helicopter rescued a person during the episode.
Fire at the D. K. Russell place Yesterd ay evening damaged a barn and contents with losses estimated at 15 000 to 18 000. The Clearbrook Fire Company responded with three engines. Cause was listed as lightning or storm-related, with investigation ongoing.
Report indicates no fruit damage, though leaves were stripped from cucumbers and melons near Mrs. Garland Snapp's property. Hailstones ranged from marble to 25 cent piece size. Wind damage noted east of Berryville near Shenandoah River with a severe electrical storm in town. State Police found Rt. 723 flooded by field effluent but traffic continued. Isaac's Creek rose 15 feet by 7 p.m., highest in 50 years. Hail also reported at Gore and Gainesboro.
Thousands of pro West and pro Red students clashed with police around Japan's Diet building in Tokyo. Rioters overran gates burned police trucks and sacked a two story annex as Cabinet held an emergency session ahead of President Eisenhower's Tokyo visit. Police used tear gas and water cannons with over 3 000 protesters in the area and a rising death toll reported.
In Berryville the first ward reelects Andrew La Velle with 263 votes while Barbara MacKe rd wards sec ond ward with 240 and Kaye with 252. Roy E. Potts Jr retains his post in the council race.
Andrew J. Halloran Framiije president Judge Robert Cannon Milwaukee chief justice of the Grand Aerie Tribunal and James Pujin Connelsville Pa past president of the Pennsylvania State Aerie will be the principal speakers at the Virginia State Aerie Eagles Convention in Winchester. The George Washington Hotel conclave will unite state Eagle leaders local Aero delegates officers and visitors and vote to elect officers. Halloran serves as state president of the Massachusetts Aerie and has held major offices. Cannon has led Eagle councils and served as president of the Milwaukee Aerie.
L Kephart headed Boyce Council with 41 votes for mayor while Lanham matched him with 41 ballots. Other vote getters included Lamon 36, Grim 4, Zombro 44, Hudson 14, Hawkins 93, J W Casey 6, Copen haver 5, and several one vote write ins. poll totals show multiple candidates for recorder and minor contenders.
