Merger Plan Seen Boosting Rail System Efficiency
Norfolk and Western and Chesapeake and Ohio urge the Interstate Commerce Commission to approve a merger plus consolidation of five smaller lines to balance competition with Penn Central. The plan would form a large system with a subsidiary for the smaller lines and preserve protections for debt, with varied support and objections from multiple parties including the Justice Department and state entities.

May Pioneer Concrete Architecture in Englewood
The Denver suburb of Englewood showcases a pioneering concrete building designed by Charles Deaton. Standing 32 feet high with an eight inch concrete shell, the structure combines a bow like form with a 44 by 44 foot lobby and five teller windows within a 10,000 square foot space. The design, praised by F. S. Clough of the Concrete Reinforcing Steel Institute, illustrates beauty through reinforced concrete amid a mile high setting.
