The C P group pushes for William Howard Hoover nomination with Secretary Mellons backing a Dawes vice presidency. Dawes is favored as the logical choice, while Borah and others shift toward Hoover's column in Ohio.
The first commencement at the new Handley Colored School in Winchester drew the largest crowd yet for a colored graduation. Prof. George M. Sampson delivered the address urging better facilities and compulsory attendance. The program honored eight graduates with solos, a saxophone piece, and a handiwork display highlighting domestic science and manual training projects.
Virginia delegates to the Republican National Convention back Col. Henry W. Anderson as Hoover’s running mate on a Nationalist ticket. Resolutions endorsed Hoover and Anderson pledging full support, while Slemp and Caldwell won renomination in a brisk delegation session. The event foreshadows southern gains for Hoover.
The Rev Dr William Mann Irvine longtime Mercersburg Academy headmaster died from a cerebral hemorrhage at age about 63 The Princeton football captain and Princeton Theological Seminary graduate led the school from two small buildings to a renowned preparatory institution with national and international students and a long waiting list.

An illustrated lecture on Christian Education with slides will be given at the First Brethren Church on Berryville avenue this Thursday evening at o'clock. Prof Edwin E Jacobs Ph D president of Ashland College and the Rev W S Bell traveling secretary will attend. Both are leaders of a great Christian institution and invite all to meet and hear them.

The funeral for Mrs. Ida E. Baecher wife of James P. Baecher of Mill Wood Road Frederick County will be held from the Church of the Sacred Heart at 10 oclock Wednesday morning. The Rev Father Thomas B Martin will officiate and interment will follow in the Catholic Cemetery. Pallbearers are Lewis Trier Thomas Trier David Reardon Maurice M. Lynch Philip Klompus and John A. Shine. The body rests at Parlett Funeral Parlors on North Braddock Street. Mrs. Baecher aged about fifty born October 28 1878 near Broadway Rockingham County Va is survived by her husband two sons Audrey and Cle tus Baecher four daughters Mrs James Hart Mrs Russell Teets Mrs Richard Keffer and Miss Teressa Baecher her mother Mrs Henry F. Kern two sisters Mrs William L. Poston and Mrs Charles D. Baker three brothers John W George I. Kern and Richard Kern.

A large turnout marked the Winchester city general election for mayor and six council seats. Polls opened at 4 39 am and closed at 7 32 pm with drivers offering free rides to boost participation. Democratic mayoral candidate F Amos Shryock faced independent William B Cooper. In Ward 1, Democrats Baker Miller and Allen run unopposed. Ward 2 sees independent Fred A Robinson challenging Harper Page and W A Sale.
The trans Atlantic monoplane Columbia passed over Kemptown Colchester County at 12 50 pm en route to Harbor Grace Newfoundland. Miss Mabel Bell was aboard with Captain Boufillier Arthur Argles and Andrew Surrini. Weather forecast showed good flying conditions with a 25 mile per hour head wind across the Atlantic.
KING'S BAY Spitzbergen June 12 The Italia crew stranded on ice north of Spitzbergen faced a crisis as Captain Riiser-Larsen and Lieutenant Luetzow Holm rushed aid. Three crewmen are missing likely lost. The expedition is split into two drifting groups moving west toward land while fuel arrives at Mossel Bay for Holm after a five day recon in foggy ice.

Miss Georgeanna May Rose child of Mr and Mrs Grover Rose of 11 North Loudoun Winchester died early at Memorial Hospital after a rapid illness blamed on meningitis following an ear abscess and Bright's disease. She was a seventh grade student at Handley High School and a Grace Lutheran Church member. Funeral at her home Thursday at 4 conducted by Rev C A Freed with Mount Hebron Cemetery burial.
Mrs. Virginia Simpson learned of the death of Kendall Packett son of Mr and Mrs George Packett formerly of this city but lately of Hagerstown Maryland He was employed by the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad as is another brother and their father He belonged to the Woodmen of World Camp Hagerstown and was nephew of Mrs Charles Ebert of this city.
