The Shenandoah Area Council announces the second Philmont Scout Ranch Expedition for Explorer-age Boy Scouts. Thirty boys and three adult leaders are registered to depart Martinsburg West Virginia by air conditioned bus at 7 30 a m on June 18, reaching Philmont near Cimarron roughly four days later.
A Martinsburg led crew of Explorers plans a twelve day journey from Fort Belvoir New Mexico to the west. Led by Paul Nichols Walter Braithwaite and Max Nagley the expedition will travel July 4 to July 10 with stops at St. Louis Kansas City Lajunta Palo Duro Canyon New Orleans the White House of the Confederacy and Great Smoky Mountains. The roster lists many Martinsburg and surrounding area youths with room for a few more Explorers.
Those registered in Scouting who will be 14 years of age on September 1 are eligible to go. For details contact your unit leader or district scout executive or council office in Winchester. The Philmont Overnighter training session for trek participants will be June 8 and 9 at Camp Rock Enon, with District Scout Executive Monroe D. Grizzard in charge. Session starts at 4 pm.
