Test Vote Monday On Rent Controls

The Senate scheduled a Monday test vote on rent controls after Senator Cain timed a 12 hour filibuster. The bill would extend federal rent ceilings six months and allow localities a further six months by request. Cain’s delaying tactic followed a day of minor bills and his record filibuster stood near the six hour mark, far from the all time 18 hour record.

Clarke Chamber Elects Barnett President in Berryville

Edward N. Barnett was elected president of the Clarke County Chamber of Commerce at a board meeting in the Berryville courthouse, succeeding Joseph Emmerth. Kenneth N. Gilpin Jr. was named vice president to replace J. G. Burch, with John Friant reelected secretary treasurer. William W Remington to resign in protest

William W Remington says he is innocent and will quit his $10,000 a year Commerce Department post Monday to devote time to proving he has never been a Communist. The 32 year old wartime naval intelligence lieutenant will face federal court in New York Tuesday on charges he lied about Communist ties. The department economist notified Secretary Sawyer by letter of his resignation, to take effect at end of business Monday. Sawyer would not comment.

Plane Crashes Into Barracks Near Spartan School

An Army C 47 plane carrying 18 persons crashed into three aviation school barracks at Tulsa airport during takeoff injuring three people critically. Georgetown police said 22 year old Granville G. Brittingham was shot with a 22 caliber gun. Thelma D. Powell 31, a former WAC and mother of two, admitted shooting in an oral statement. No charges were logged immediately.
