Kennedy wins Senate passage of the 6.14 billion housing bill after a 13 hour marathon session. The measure advances to the House with administration gains restoring most housing programs despite a Gore amendment cutting the moderate income family plan.
The Shenandoah Apple Blossom Festival executive committee voted unanimously to authorize officers to borrow up to 10000 from local banks to cover current obligations. President JK Robinson said much of the sum would be recouped from in town and out of town memberships in coming months.
The International Apple Association with headquarters in Washington outlines National Apple Week to run October 12 to 21. Bourbon County High School band from Paris Kentucky reports a fine Festival Experience despite hail. The county marks its 175th anniversary with band members sporting mustaches and beards. Also notes on a dust free football field at Senseny Road and local ads for German Chocolate Cake and used TVs.
Stephens City Council passed final reading authorizing bonds up to 165000 for a proposed sewage treatment plant. A public meeting is set for June 21 at the fire hall to explain the lagoon system, with a referendum on June 30. Bonds run up to 30 years at up to six percent interest.
The Prince Edward County board of supervisors faced a public hearing on its proposed 690 051 budget to restore public education after two years of school closures amid a racial dispute. Dr C Gordon Moss urged restoring funds. three Negro residents spoke seeking education funding. others urged continuing past actions.
A 24 year old Edinburg man, Shirley Lee Andrick, suffered a crushed left arm when an ambulance struck his arm as it passed another car in Woodstock. The incident occurred last night. Andrick was treated at Shenandoah County Memorial Hospital. His car remained undamaged.
West Germany rejected Soviet protests as artificial and unjustified after Moscow accused Berlin meetings by West German Bundestag committees. Bonn noted four power status legal ground, cited past similar sessions, and said Khrushchev’s 1959 demand framed Moscow's current stance.
Ambassador Adlai E. Stevenson arrives in Montevideo as Kennedy’s UN envoy amid potential protests from students and workers sympathetic to Castro. He plans meetings with government leaders and then tours Brazil and Argentina to urge improvement of living standards as a bulwark against communism.
At Handley high school commencement 119 seniors received diplomas and numerous awards. Barbara Ann Chaplin earned a $4,000 Armstrong Foundation scholarship to be paid in four $1,000 installments.
The Tractors for Freedom Committee prepared to ship 500 tractors to Cuba in exchange for 1,214 prisoners released. A six member technical team of agricultural experts would travel to Havana if Castro approves, with delivery of the first 100 tractors within two weeks. The group urged Red Cross involvement and named prominent backers including Mrs. Eisenhower and Walter Reuther.
An easterly wave in the Caribbean signals the approaching 1961 hurricane season, which officially opens in six days. The Miami Weather Bureau says it should bring only showers, though such waves can precede a hurricane. Air Force and Navy reconnaissance crews stand ready on June 1 to investigate suspicious areas, with the season ending in November.

Alexander Sterling Callander 22 of Arlington identified as the MG driver in a crash on Rt 50 east of Winchester. He died in the fire after colliding with a 1958 Mack tractor trailer driven by Charlie Battle of Durham, North Carolina. Callander was a Virginia Polytechnic Institute student.
Mayor Claude B. Smalts will lead a delegation greeting 1000 Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts arriving at the Baltimore & Ohio Station on E Piccadilly Street. Laurens P. Jones heads local Scout interests as the visitors proceed to Mt Hebron Cemetery for a public address and tours of historic sites.
In Concord New Hampshire three children Keith Loughry six Glen four and William Anderson four died after climbing into a second floor porch freezer chest. The lid closed trapping them for about an hour before discovery by neighbor Beverly Egounis and mother Mrs Thomas Loughry who led a search with others.
