Government conciliators floated a plan to replace a reduced shipboard workweek with paid shore leave for sailors. With a June 15 strike deadline looming, CMU unions and ship operators weigh a proposal that would keep the 56-hour week but grant paid time off when in port, possibly a day ashore every two weeks at sea.
Ambassador Galo Plaza of Ecuador told graduates at College Park that nations must surrender some sovereignty to a world organization for lasting peace. The University of Maryland alumnus received an honorary degree and warned the Monroe Doctrine must yield as the United States assumes a global leadership role amid atomic age threats. A statewide manhunt for a suspect in the fatal shooting of Rollin Roscoe Riley shifts to Ocean City after Riley’s body is found in his Princess Anne apartment. The victim, a New Jersey poultry buyer, was shot in the temple with a large caliber pistol. Riley often bought broilers for Philadelphia markets. The abandoned light pickup was located in Ocean City at about 5 a.m. Authorities have not issued a warrant.
A Pennsylvania Railroad train from St. Louis to New York derailed five cars a mile west of Burgettstown, Pa. Three of the cars were sleepers. Railroad reports indicate nobody was hurt.
Report notes that a Senate Appropriations panel examined widespread use of government telegrams by two Senators. A proposed annual limit of 300 messages per Senator is included in the annual appropriations bill, along with a $2 500 per year expense allowance atop $10 000 salary. The committee heard in secret that one Senator directed copies of a petition message to thousands of names, while another Senator’s telegraphic activity also faced scrutiny during the closed session.
J Victor Arthur was elected vice-president and chairman of the Virginia Association of Insurance Agents at a Virginia Beach session. Roger Clarke of Fredericksburg was named national state director. Senator Harry F Byrd spoke at the banquet warning that a presidential veto of the Case Bill would hurt labor and curb strikes, arguing the measure seeks to limit labor conflict and protect government institutions.
FRANKFURT June 8 The army announced a 17-year-old German girl employed by the American Red Cross was found shot through the head Thursday in a billet near Bad HINgen. She was alone at the time and the theater provost marshal said she is alleged to have shot herself. This marks the fifth German girl to die in soldiers quarters within a month.
Army investigators report nearly all jewels valued up to 1.5 million recovered from Kronberg Castle raid. The last gems were found removed from settings in a box at Illinois Central Station Chicago after 8:30 p.m. arresting Capt Kathleen B Nash Durant and Col J W Durant tied to the theft.
Theodore Y Kinzel 81 a prominent banker and Mason died at Radee Memorial Hospital at 4 am following a heart attack. He chaired Farmers and Merchants Bank and served 44 years since its 1902 founding. Survived by a sister Emma Yost Kinzel and seven nieces and two nephews. Funeral 4 pm Monday at the family home with Rev James Roe officiating.
Four Senate banking committee members oppose the amended price control extension bill now before Congress. They warn it would end price wage and rent stabilization and threaten economic safety if enacted. The minority calls for a decided fight against inflation rather than surrender to free market forces.
Eleven people are injured in two explosions in Egypt including four British soldiers and seven Egyptians. A missile or grenade hit Mus ee Kamel barracks around midnight and another blast occurred when grenades were found in a basket behind British barracks at Ramleh.

The nude body of Mary Duffy, 40, was found on a second floor Philadelphia apartment. A 46 year old painter led police to the scene and was questioned. Duffy had been estranged from her husband and bore signs of a brutal struggle with facial injuries and possible letter marks on the torso.

Richmond lawyer Martin Hutchinson, opposing Senator Harry Byrd, and Henry Wise, Accomack county schools superintendent, traded views on labor after Wise asked Hutchinson for his position on labor and the CIO PAC. Wise expressed surprise Hutchinson publicized Wise's letter and sent a copy to Byrd.

The settlement ends a week long strike after talks between anthracite operators and John L. Lewis led United Mine Workers. The welfare fund cost is tied to last year’s anthracite production and will be funded by a five cent a ton levy. Estimated overall concessions may total 50 to 60 million dollars annually for operators, with a potential one dollar per ton rise in anthracite retail prices.
County Judge J F Wellman conducted a wedding in the Lawrence County courthouse drawing over a hundred persons from Gladys five miles west of here. The emplaced couple obtained a license and wed after parental consent was secured. Witnesses included former Louisa police court judge D M Cornette and E A Kirk.
