Congressman Burr Harrison told 116 James Wood High graduates to pursue politics as a career and urged civic participation. He warned that special interests press for wasteful spending and called for economy in government and active leadership by young Americans.
A gunman in a blue sedan shot at four motorists in central Illinois, injuring one. Police widened the hunt over a 170 mile area from Towanda to near Springfield with roadblocks and a search for blue sedans. The attacker has fired on eight drivers over two weeks, often fleeing north or south after the shots.
Allied fighters claimed nine MiG jets shot down and four damaged in the past week with no Allied aircraft losses. Anti-aircraft fire downed a lone F80 and a T6, while a B26 night bomber failed to return. Fighter-bombers hit railway lines near Kangeyo and Huichon, cutting 32 rails with three bridges destroyed and 26 freight cars out. Marine and Eighth Army units supported ground actions on the Western Front and in Korea.
Taft expected to collect Virginia's final two delegates at the Seventh District GOP convention in Staunton. The Shenandoah Valley district, a Taft stronghold, could push Taft toward at least 12 of Virginia's 23 national convention delegates in Chicago.
At the Rouss Fire Company meeting John J. Hawse announced the completion of the history of the company and its predecessor the Union Fire Company. Copies are kept by the company and Winchester Historical Society. Plans for a July 4 and 5 yard party were discussed with about 20 cakes pledged. William Haines joined the organization, first as a Union member at age 14 and later with Rouss since its inception.
F James Barnes II of Richmond appointed director of alumni and information at the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg Virginia.
A House Judiciary subcommittee recessed after former Detroit assistant US attorney George T. Petzer testified he wrote a note linking Atty. Gen. J Howard McGrath and William M Boyle to a war contracts case. Petzer said the note, written at 4 a.m. after a party, was false and he denied any appointment with McGrath.
FBI charges against Ronald M Carpenter and George Molino Sanches, both 27, for fraudulently obtaining dependency allotments from the Air Force totaling over $2,000. Sanches, dressed as a woman, used the alias Mrs Eleana Carpenter, while Carpenter posed as her husband and was later arrested at Travis Air Force Base. They filed for monthly checks and were charged with conspiracy and theft.
Sen. Robert Taft proposed a compromise on rival GOP delegations in the South during a news conference in Indianapolis. Eisenhower campaign manager Henry Lodge Jr. rejected the idea, while Taft backers welcomed it in Texas and Indiana. Taft aimed to avoid seating fights at the July 7 national convention in Chicago.
The Rev. Theodore E. Landis of Alexandria will preach the Handley High School baccalaureate at 8 p m Sunday. Dr T Clark of Winchester will conduct, with prayer by Dr Ronald S and introduction by Dr William Archer Wright. The program includes hymns, readings, and a Welsh chorale. Landis is a Western Maryland AB and Westminster STB, has served in several churches and will join the Southeastern Jurisdictional Conference in Roanoke June 25.
Indiana Republicans moved to name 32 Taft delegates at large after district caucuses produced about 20 Taft backers and one Eisenhower supporter. Eisenhower allies cried foul, pledging to contest at Chicago as Indiana GOP leaders set a filing deadline and a $500 fee to qualify slate candidates.
The Rouss Drum and Bugle Corps won second prize of $100 at the V F W parade in Hagerstown Maryland last night. Their next performance is June 14 at the Potomac River Festival in Colonial Beach.
Over 100 planes will scour Virginia skies tomorrow in the annual rescue exercise conducted by the state Civil Air Patrol wing.
Communist forces occupied the Frohnau Estate on the German frontier, seizing 60 percent of its acreage in the French sector and expelling five families. They confiscated livestock and tightened controls on traffic and refugees as East German defenses push to arm. Western reports note ongoing Allied patrol restrictions and radio tensions in Berlin.

Gen Dwight D. Eisenhower said he would be willing to meet Premier Stalin if it promoted peace, but he judged East West differences non negotiable while the Soviet Union suppresses free government. He warned only work and sacrifice could ease world tensions and affirmed a secure peace as paramount.
UN truce negotiators in Munsan Korea walked out on the Communist delegation after a three day recess in stalled armistice talks. Maj Gen William Harrison said the Reds could come tomorrow but the talks would not resume until June 11. The UN Command added negotiators would meet again Wednesday or later if the Communists wished. The deadlock centers on prisoner exchanges and the daily meeting demand used as propaganda.
Rocky Marciano and Harry Matthews vie for a 10 round heavyweight bout at Yankee Stadium on July 28. Both fighters earn 30 percent of revenue from gate and media rights. Matthews, 29, has not lost in 70 fights. Marciano rides a 40 fight win streak since turning pro in 1948 after beating Joe Louis last October.
The Associated Press reports widespread heat across the nation with 90s and higher in many areas. Rain clouds forecast later weekend showers with cooler relief and scattered wet spots from New England to the Gulf Coast.
British infantrymen from the King's Shropshire Light Infantry used six tear gas grenades to drive Communist prisoners of war back from a barbed wire fence at Koje Island Korea. No injuries were reported. The incident follows the prior use of tear gas last Wednesday during engineer digging for a suspected escape. The compound housed 2,700 North Korean officers and 650 non commissioned officers.

Alienhany County police seek tips after a human foot found in Selma two weeks ago. Sheriff Emory A. Thompson and doctors believe it may belong to a large child or small woman. The foot was found in Pat Hostedder's garden by J. R. Johnson on May 24 and sent to Lynchburg hospital for examination. Thompson suspects it may have been from a dissected body tossed roadside. dog carry is possible.
