A German broadcast heard by NBC claimed Bayeux had fallen to Allied forces after a night battle, with fighting continuing around Caen on the Cherbourg peninsula.
Allied air forces dominated the skies over France with more than 13 000 sorties from dawn to dawn and heavy British bombers and U S raiders pressing assaults beyond the beachhead. Firelight over the channel showed ships moving in both directions while Allied losses included 13 British heavy bombers and 17 fighters with 53 enemy aircraft destroyed.
Japanese troops are reported close to the city of Changsha in a renewed Hunan drive aimed at controlling the Hankow Cantoh Railroad. Chinese forces have pushed from Chiaotou to Chiangtso and Watien and attacked near Lameng with U S air support and heavy artillery on the Salween front.
Frederick County Farm Labor Committee wins approval to use Smith field between Virginia Avenue School and Kern Street for a prisoner of war labor camp. About 1 000 Bahamians and 250 POW prisoners would be housed in 56 tents under armed guard until March 15, with wages split between prisoners and Army.
Chicago reports a bigger civilian food supply with 145 pounds of meat per person up from 137. George M. Lewis of the American Meat Institute and William Garfitt of the United Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Association forecast higher meat and produce availability for civilians this year at the National Association of Retail Grocers convention.

Navy Secretary Forrestal told the 104th graduating class of the U S Naval Academy that American and British navies have controlled Atlantic sea lanes for two and a half years through constant study of enemy tactics and coordination of surface ships land-based aircraft and flat tops. He noted convoy success since January 1 1942 with seven ships sailed and only ten losses none of them troop transports, and said no single weapon won the war the airplane and carrier force created decisive power far beyond submarines.
City voters will go to the polls Tuesday June 13 to elect a mayor and six councilmen. The Democratic ticket is unopposed with Dr. C. R. Anderson for mayor and six candidates across two wards. Election officials urged turnout and named precinct judges and clerks for Friendship Rouss and City Hall precincts. Registrars for two year terms begin July 1 include W E Jones Kenneth Henry and W Benton Snider.
Washington June 7 The House Appropriations Committee voted a $49,109,002,795 War Department appropriation for the year starting July 1. The total funds exceed current obligations by about $8.5 billion and include a carryover of $33.7 billion. Major allotment goes to the air forces at $12.61 billion with significant sums for lend-lease and civilian aid under UNRRA. Wasps program receives $6.39 million.
Berlin broadcast reports by Deutsche Nachrichten-Bank that the entire Allied airborne division has landed on the western coast of the Normandy peninsula.
Allied troops repulsed German counter-attacks in the Caen area of France. All beaches are cleared of the enemy though some portions may still face artillery fire.
