16 Killed As Farm Labor Truck Collides On North Carolina Road
A flat bed truck carrying migrant farm laborers and a tractor trailer crashed at the intersection of Highways 301 and 102 nine miles north of Fayetteville. Sixteen people were killed and 21 were taken to area hospitals, 14 in critical condition. Fire trapped victims as witnesses described a scene of mangled bodies and a “wall of fire.” The laborers were from several states and were en route to Dunn, North Carolina, to harvest beans. The tractor trailer driver Gilbert Robert Peters of Watwallopen, Pa., was slightly hurt.
