A massive blaze destroyed the York Inn and adjoining motel units near Route 11. Owner Charles Pine estimates damage at 100000 with little insurance. Firefighters from Clearbrook Shawnee Rouss and others battled the flames through early morning, saving only some motel furniture. No definite cause yet. building primarily logs with brick siding.
Police hunted suspects across three Paris boroughs after a dawn attack by Algerian commandos in two light trucks left 11 dead including four French army soldiers. Four Algerians and five Paris officers were detained at Vincennes as part of the investigation.
Industrialist Bernard Goldfine was ordered to serve one year and one day in prison and pay a 110000 fine for income tax evasion. U S District Court Judge George C Sweeney also placed him on five years probation and gave similar probation to his secretary Miss Paperman.
