Holton Denies Any Partiality in Pardon

May Jobless Rate Matches Nine-Year High

The U S unemployment rate rose in May to 6.2 percent, tied the nine year high, with joblessness up especially among construction, sales and young women. The bureau reported 4.4 million unemployed, average earnings rising to 3.40 per hour and 125.46 per week, while inflation reduced purchasing power.

Lead in Air Rises Across Three Cities, EPA Finds

EPA report shows lead concentrations up from 1961-62 to 1968-69 in Los Angeles Philadelphia and Cincinnati. Increases ranged 2 to 64 percent at multiple sites with motor vehicle exhausts cited as main source. Winchester Mayors Plan U S Visit For Celebrations

Winchester England mayor Stanley Steele and his wife arrived in New York to join in the 200th anniversary of Winchester Connecticut. They will visit Winchester Virginia Washington D C and San Francisco during a six week U S tour arriving June 24 in New York. Mayor Steele said he brought a silver tray from Winchester Connecticut and an old print for Winchester Virginia.
