The Senate opened a heavy debate on a bill from Sen. Maybank to bar strikes in critical industries for 120 days, create a settlement board, and permit presidential seizure if terms are rejected. The measure was sponsored by the South Carolina Democrat.
The Senate defeated a proposal to keep the Wage Stabilization Board with labor, industry and public members and its powers to settle disputes. The 56 to 26 vote was on an amendment to extend the Economic Controls Law offered by Sen. Douglas. A rival plan to oust labor and industry members remains pending, opposed by President Truman.
Senate Banking Committee faces an immediate test as Maybank proposes to seize plants with compensation while banning wage changes, a move criticized as tougher on labor than Taft Hartley. The dispute pits CIO Steelworkers Union against the steel industry after a Supreme Court ruling voided seizure.
Dr. Ronald S. Wilson pastor of the Presbyterian Church returned by air from Mexico City where he attended the Rotary International annual meeting as Governor of the 275th District and a local club delegate. His governor term ends June 30 and he will move to Miami to lead Westminster Presbyterian Church starting June 16 after 15 years at the local church. The Mexico City meeting discussed by laws changes and officer elections with next year’s meeting planned for Paris.

An American military policeman was shot and wounded by an East German police border guard on the outskirts of Berlin today. Maj. Gen. Lemuel Mathewson, U. S. commander in Berlin, implied the incident prompted a response.

Thousands gather beside the railroad in Abilene Kansas to welcome Dwight D Eisenhower as he exits the Army and NATO role and enters the political arena. Backers plan a 30 minute speech at Eisenhower Park and a high visibility news conference to energize his bid for the Republican nomination.

Mrs Elizabeth B Avent 26 of Hopewell Virginia was killed in a three vehicle crash near Sullivan Indiana Tuesday night. Her husband Herman Avent 27 and their four year old daughter Patricia were critically injured. Truck drivers Harlan Roberts and Robert E Bedwell 36 of Terre Haute Indiana were seriously hurt. The Avent car hit Roberts truck on a bridge then struck Bedwell’s truck, police said.
President Truman requests a supplemental appropriation of 3,463,555,440 dollars for the Defense Department for the upcoming fiscal year starting July 1. The commission outlines the urgent need to sustain defense operations and contingencies.
