Vatican bulletin reports Pope John XXIII, age 81, died at 7:49 p.m. EST after a long battle with a stomach tumor and peritonitis. The pope, known as a symbol of unity and peace, faced his final hours serenely, describing himself as ready for the end.
About 100 delegates of the Virginia State Assn. of Izaak Walton Leagues approved four resolutions during a quarterly session in Winchester. They backed dams on the Potomac to regulate waters and urged a state roads program and a bird habitat plan. Also discussed were a statewide hunters safety program and seed patching for Future Farmers of America students.

More than 1000 members of the 26th Division Pennsylvania National Guard stopped in Winchester on their way to Camp AP Hill for two weeks of training. They camped at the armory, cooked meals, and moved on early, with some travelers from Ohio among the hundreds passing through this month and next.
Air Force investigators examined the wrecked Atlas intercontinental missile silo in Roswell New Mexico after a Saturday explosion. The blast ripped two 2 ton doors off their hinges and flung them about 75 feet. five crew members escaped unharmed.

Federal District Judge Seybourn H. Lynne heard the Justice Department bid to bar Gov George Wallace from interfering with the University of Alabama enrollments for Negro students. He said he will prepare a written memorandum by 9 a.m. Wednesday after an 80 minute hearing.
Baccalaureate services opened commencements at three area high schools with 185 James Wood seniors hearing Dr. James L. Robertson. Clarke County 71 seniors heard Rev. Frank Q. Cayce. Johnson Williams eight seniors heard Rev. Mrs. Emma Keys. Handley and Douglas will hold baccalaureate next Sunday. Handley diplomas June 12 and Douglas diplomas June 11.
The Rev. Dr. Randolph Ray of Fairfield Connecticut died Saturday at age 76. He served 35 years as rector of New York's Little Church Around the Corner and married thousands of couples before retiring in 1958.
The U S Supreme Court unanimously struck down two public school transfer plans in Knoxville and Davidson County that allowed race based pupil moves. Justices held the plans discriminated against Negro students and failed to meet Brown v Board standards.
An Indian Airlines DC3 Dakota crashed near Srinagar on a flight from Amritsar killing 29 aboard. Passports and passenger lists identify five victims as the family of Associate Professor James Clarence Laverty of Champaign Illinois, including his spouse.
Lou Labourie aged 55 of Gardnerville Nev died after a refrigerator toppled onto him from a pickup bed on U S Highway 395 Labourie was riding in the truck bed when a steep grade caused the unit to slide out and fall on him, investigators reported

Clarke County prepares a fox trapping program to curb rabies with three U S Fish and Wildlife Service trappers. Over 23 days each trapper will use 40 traps and must gain landowner permission. Gray foxes no bounty during the period, red foxes unrestricted. Dr. Marks notes Clarke leads rabid fox reports statewide. northern Virginia also affected.
Gertrude Baker Barton age 92 died at Knott Rest Home Carles Town West Virginia. Born May 1 1871 in Winchester she was widow of Robert T Barton a city lawyer and lifelong Christ Episcopal Church member active in the Diocese of Virginia. She organized and led the Diocesan Junior Auxiliary for 17 years and headed the Women’s Auxiliary before serving multiple terms at Christ Church. She taught Sunday School and spearheaded church work.
Farmers welcomed a tropical disturbance bringing heavy rains to Virginia ahead of cooler nights. Showers help corn, pasture, and gardens with five day outlook near normal temperatures, though precipitation in March exceeded average while year to date remains low.
