French forces backed by jet bombers mounted a major operation against a large rebel force trapped in the Biban Mountains southwest of Bougie. The clash left the rebels claiming 400 losses, with 290 dead and 110 prisoners.
Virginia’s 1956 traffic toll climbs to 322 with six more highway deaths. Among the victims are Mrs. Madeline Barlowe of Crewe and Mrs. George Thomas Marks of Worthington, whose deaths follow a Charlottsville area crash. The AP reports warn toll could reach about 500 by year’s end.
Frederick Clarke aged 70 is reported in connection with an alcohol and gas city incident. The brief notice notes his involvement and the event context with local officials and a preliminary investigation underway.
Loyd Allen Johnson, 18, Clarke County High senior, will receive The Star Leadership Award for the Clarke County School System at graduation exercises on the school lawn. The $350 award is one of three totaling $1,050 given yearly by The Star to outstanding local seniors. Johnson, valedictorian, was praised by physics teacher William B. Taylor as a guiding leader with strong academic achievement. The Star awards, started in 1954, aim to expand local youths’ educational and community opportunities.

The 121 seniors and 1000 guests filled the auditorium as diplomas were issued. The Winchester Evening Star funded a $350 scholarship to Charles David Symons Jr. Lions Club awards honored Miss Marydel Stockdale and Dean Nunn for musical achievements.
An informal reception and brief program will honor Miss Lucy F Kurtz on Wednesday June 6 from 7 to 9 p m in the George Washington Hotel ballroom. Mayor M B Clowe Jr signed a proclamation naming June 6 Miss Lucy Kurtz Day.
The O Sullivan Rubber Corporation presented a four point plan to union members at 11 a m session at the George Washington Hotel. The plan proposes reconsidering the contract, continuing operations under the old terms until a new one is signed, reinstating workers with protections save those guilty of misconduct, and early vacation pay for returns by June 4 with installments on June 8 and June 15. M M Miller Sr and Miss Evelyn Richards led the union side with Dale Dougherty and Bruce Swain for the company.
Jack G. Orndorff of Arlington who, with his wife, filed in a segregation suit by the NCAAP, withdraws from the case. He says families opposed participation after consultation and the couple will no longer be part of the petition. Barbara Marx and others cited religious beliefs in joining the action.
A two inch rainfall drenched central and eastern Virginia with the heaviest downpours since last summer. Richmond reported 2.08 inches by midmorning, Norfolk 1.77, Cape Henry 1.15, and Blackstone 1.91. The State Highway Department said main routes remained open despite rising creeks.
Tito arrives in Moscow to mend differences with Soviet leaders as Dmitri Shepilov takes over as foreign minister succeeding Molotov. Bulganin Khrushchev lead welcoming party. Belgrade reacts positively to the leadership change. The Belgrade trip last year aimed to repair the 1948 split with Tito.
The Winchester Ministerial Association will lead the Baccalaureate service at Handley High School auditorium tomorrow at 8 p.m. Dr. George D. Jackson will conduct, Rev. Wayne H. Bell will preach, introduced by Rev. Rhodes Artz. Music by Handley Glee Club directed by Gwendolyn Haynes. 67 seniors to graduate next Friday.

Community notices include a removal of Dr. F J Sprecher to 117 W Boscawen St and local dining options at House of Good Food. Berry growers advertise wooden quarts and berry masters from Rice Trew and Rice Co. at Wyck St.
