Final campaign meeting reports the Winches Memorial hospital project reaching $129,728 as dinner closes. Volunteers announce 464 new subscriptions valued at $26 each, with plans for more. outlying areas show late starts but expect significant additions.
With the building fund for the greater Winchester Medical hospital well over the $500,000 mark and subscriptions still coming in, the building fund office at 7 W. Boscawen St. will remain open several weeks. Memorial Gifts and Business and Mercantile committees renew their work to complete their part in the $850,000 hospital expansion program as soon as possible.
John H. Senberger, general chairman, announced the full achievement of the 850000 goal as campaign work concluded. Public and mercantile committees carry on, praising the community effort and noting the build has rescued a major project. Mary Louise Steele’s division added new subscriptions totaling 31600, and Curtis Fray reported the run-up bringing the division total to 12320, with Arthur Proud of Workers acknowledging collective effort.
The Shenandoah association Women Missionary Union held a one day session at the First Baptist Church in Charles Town. Local women from Charles Town Martinsburg Luray Front Royal Berle and Boyce welcomed Miss Blanche White of Richmond the union's executive secretary who spoke on The Urgent Call for Great Work and Recruits for an Exding Missionary Program after a morning service and lunch hosted by the local church women with Mrs J E Wrenn Sr superintendent and other officers assisting.
Oregon towns near the Columbia flooded as crest met sea tide, with Vanport wiped out and 20 known dead plus many unaccounted. Portland, Vancouver, and Longview survived the surge but vast areas remained underwater. Red Cross and Salvation Army expand aid while typhoid immunization teams operate in shelters as temporary housing and food distribution continue.
The United States and Britain France Belgium the Netherlands and Luxembourg announced a provisional agreement on future Western Germany development. It reportedly includes full German participation in the European Recovery Program and aims for early formal approval by all involved governments. Provisions remain secret until officially transmitted from London.
The 82nd anniversary Confederate Memorial Day observance occurs Sunday at Stonewall Cemetery in Winchester with Turner by chapter UDC hosting. The program includes music by a municipal band, invocation, remarks by Rev. James B. Roe, and a flag presentation from Southern states by W. W. Glass. The Col. Ashby marker will be unveiled by Lucy Leavell McDonald, great great niece. If rain, events move to Christ Episcopal Church at 4 p.m.
The remains of Private Charles Loring Hoover, son of Mr and Mrs John Hoover of 422 South Cameron Street, killed in action in northern Africa on November 29 1942, arrived by train at 11 44 a m accompanied by military escort. Funeral services are set for 2 30 p m Sunday at his parents home with Rev Dr Lewis F Havermale and Rev James B Roe officiating. Interment will be in Mount Hebron cemetery with military honors by Conrad Hoover post No 21 American Legion. Pallbearers include George H Ritter Robert Ens John MacMillan Robert C Jasper Joseph C Ritter John W Carpenter Robert Lee Netti Babb. He was born in Winchester in 1920 and studied at Handley High School and the Abbott School of Fine and Commercial Art in Washington DC.
Winchester officials urged parents to boost participation for the annual Soap Box Derby set for July. With under 15 entrants so far, the town risks losing its 1949 franchise if at least 30 participants do not compete. Prizes include a free Akron trip for the Winchester champ and a guardian, a $4000 college scholarship for the national winner, a new Chevrolet for the runner up, and other awards. Entry forms are at B and M Chevrolet Co.

Lewis labels SPA propaganda and fears negotiating with it. contract ends June 30 with strike risk.

Principal Bryant Harper will present diplomas to 30 Stonewall High seniors at 8 PM EST. Rep Burr Harrison will be guest speaker. Glee club performances include An Irish Love Song, Ighy Lak'a Rose, and Alona Lange. Choral group Voices of the Woods and senior songs noted.
The House passed a peacetime Army Air Force appropriation bill totaling 10.196 billion for the three services, with a separate 6.509 billion for Army and Air Forces. Testimony warned of Soviet military threat as the Navy plans a 65,000 ton carrier and submarines killer ship, while manpower goals push to 1.734 million total.

Lt Joe Thomas long engaged in military service dies of wounds from Salerno Italy and will be honored at a Friday graveside service at Mt Hebron cemetery with Dr Ronald Wilson officiating. The Winchester native served under Patton and Clark in the Seventh Army and Fifth Army before his death in a North African base hospital.
BIRMINGHAM June 2 Alabama voters approved a bolt from the Democratic National convention over the civil rights issue. They also decided by a wide margin that Gov. James E. Folsom would not go to the convention as a delegate. Folsom had been a presidential candidate in the May 4 primary and finished tenth for delegate-at-large. Nine of the eleven delegates chosen yesterday pledged to walk out at Philadelphia if a strong civil rights plank or Truman nomination. Five others were elected May 4, giving a majority for the delegation. Alabama’s 11 electors are pledged against voting for Truman or any nominee who approves civil rights measures.
Landsberg Germany June 24 seven German doctors and SS officers were hanged by US war crimes courts for brutal medical experiments in concentration camps. Four of the executed were doctors and three were officers who directed the Nazi research program. Among the dead was Karl Brandt Hitler’s former personal physician who proclaimed his loyalty to Germany before the hood covered his face.
Representative Vinson of Georgia introduced a bill to authorize a radar net along the U S coasts and Alaska. He said the system would give the Air Force adequate aircraft warning, with equipment costing about $160 million plus $4 million for property. Completion would take five years.
In Lake Success on June 2, Arab leaders signaled conditional support for a four week Palestine armistice, urging a UN supervised commission. Both sides accepted the UN cease-fire appeal, while fear persisted that the truce could be used to reinforce fighters. Arab officials pressed for a UN or mixed consular commission to monitor terms. Meanwhile clashes spread as Arab artillery struck Israeli positions in Romena and Givat Shaul, with reports of casualties and attacks on Negba and Hulda.
Arlington county Democratic convention elected 54 delegates to the State Democratic convention in Richmond July 2. State Sen. Charles R. Fenwick was named permanent county convention chairman. The local convention voted for unit rule at the state convention.
Washington reports on June 27 detailing White House efforts to settle the railroad labor dispute and Congress ready to act on a new retirement and unemployment plan.
