Virginia WCTU Warns State Liquor Controls Fail Rural Areas
The national and state Women’s Christian Temperance Union criticizes Virginia state liquor control in rural districts. It cites Mrs Hoge’s report of 31 beer wine and gin shops in one county and rising drunkenness among high school students and at athletic events. The release notes a 13 626 increase in state jail prisoners and claims liquor profits leave Virginia to distillers elsewhere. Regional increases are listed including Norfolk Lynchburg Danville Staunton Harrisonburg and Richmond with double digit to triple digit rises.
