Marshall Warns China Faces Bigger Calamity on Memorial Day
General George C. Marshall, America’s envoy to China, warned in Nanking that the country trembles on the verge of a greater calamity than the recent war. He urged an end to bitterness, noting China’s Communist and Nationalist forces drift toward a final clash, with Manchuria under Red control and Chiang Kai-Shek’s government seeking a settlement by battlefield imposition.

Chinese Reds expand in Manchuria threaten to overturn Chiang regime
Report notes Chinese Communist forces in Manchuria slip past withdrawing Soviet troops and seize ready arms. Maoist objectives include driving Chiang Kai-shek from northern China and ruling the region, while Nationalists resist land reform and face powerful vested interests. Coalition prospects appear unlikely due to deep political rifts.
