Blame Blast On Broken Main At Wrecked School
Investigators found a broken 1½ inch gas main outside the wrecked school building where a blast injured 53 children and four adults. Fire Chief Claude Witwer noted the break was near the basement with fumes seeping into the structure. Officials said the meter had been off for two months.
