Gov. George Romney said 24 hours passed from his first federal troop request to commitment during the Detroit riots. He cited delays by Ramsey Clark and Cyrus Vance, plus demand for an insurrection certification, as officials debated escalation and the crisis caused 44 deaths and about 500 million dollars in damage.
Two people died in Milwaukee amid renewed racial violence as fires burned and sniper activity wounded and hospitalized dozens. Police used tear gas and curfews while Army troops began withdrawing from Detroit and other cities faced riots and arrests across the country.
The Most Rev. Fulton J. Sheen urged U.S. troop withdrawal from Vietnam in a Sunday sermon calling for prayers for racial peace. He questioned reconciliation limited to citizens, while national leaders and faith communities echoed prayers for civil harmony amid violence and guard deployments.
Virginia’s Department of Conservation and Economic Development announced a new travel film about Jamestown. The 28 minute color sound film will be shot by a Norfolk company and 25 prints will join the Virginia State Travel Service film library for distribution to organizations. It features Jamestown Island and Jamestown Festival Park highlighting early settler life.
Washington AP reports President Johnson's envoys Gen. Maxwell D. Taylor and Clark Clifford meet stiff diplomatic rebuffs as Congress pressures for greater allied troop contributions in Vietnam. Westmoreland seeks more fighters from allies while Philippines President Marcos cancels briefing visit amid election tensions. Bangkok talks with Thailand follow by Thanat Komman who foresees no allied summit. Congress fears heavier U.S. force use if allies refuse.
Gov. George Romney announces three battalions of regular Army troops are being withdrawn from Detroit and sent to Selfridge Air Force Base after a week of violence. About 1,700 troops from the 82nd and 101st Airborne remain in the city, with Michigan National Guard patrols continuing on a reduced scale. Romney warns that without proper action the nation could face civil guerrilla warfare.
Mrs. Ida Smith 62 of Hamilton Ohio admitted to Winchester Memorial Hospital after a two car collision on Rt 647 east of Stephens City with damages estimated at 3500 dollars. Other patients include Venna Marie Young 38 Enid R Artrip 38 Frankie Artrip 9 Jeannette Barrett 37 and Kathie Young 12. A second incident at Braddock St and North Ave injured Gary Brown Cecilia Brown and Imogene Burrell. Bryson Sr a driver failed to stop at a stop sign and hit Brown then struck a pole and tree.
Police report a 22 year old woman Mary Frances Harris was abducted by two men in a car Sunday night as she walked near her home in the 900 block of S Buchanan St. A neighbor saw two men force her into a red 1965 Pontiac and a 13 state alarm was issued.
SAIGON AP reports the aircraft carrier Forrestal limped into Subic Bay after a devastating blaze in the Gulf of Tonkin. A fresh flash fire broke out during docking preparations though shore observers saw no flames. Casualties were revised to 129 dead with 7 missing and 67 injured.
State trooper L M Bauserman announced two 19 year olds Wilfred E Cather of 208 Fox Drive and William B Myers of 439 Handley Ave were charged with statutory burglary and grand larceny in the Willow Lawn Supermarket robbery. Both men posted bond 4000 each and Myers returned to Ft Benning Ga. A preliminary hearing is set for Aug 21. 80 dollars in cigarettes and beer were initially reported missing but inventory showed more was taken. Troopers P F Click and G N Jenkins assisted.
Pos tal service will be restored to Two Guns Tuesday forty one years after removal following the gunshot slaying of Postmaster Earl Cundiff. Officials said Mayor Ben Dreher and Postmaster E H Husband will officiate at opening ceremonies. The community lies thirty three miles east of Flagstaff.
