London July 31 AP announces German radio report that Russian forces launched a large scale assault on Praga, the eastern suburb of Warsaw, near the Vistula river, as fighting intensifies in Poland.
London July 31 AP Marshal Stalin announced the capture of Siedlce a rail town about 50 miles east of Warsaw indicating a strategic advance in the campaign.
The DNB reported Russians may have reached Warsaw and halted a Soviet breakthrough toward the city. Moscow placed Red Army forces about 20 miles east of Warsaw as Germans counterattacked and claimed Kaunas fell after seven miles inside the Suwalki triangle.
Governor Thomas E Dewey told reporters in Pittsburgh that the New Deal failed to plan for postwar conversion and that the most vital issue for Americans may be the opportunity to work He criticized eight years of Roosevelt era unemployment and said policy can help avoid a recession as he meets leaders to discuss reconversion and campaign strategy.

Miss Marguerite Alice Onn Le Hand died at Chelsa Massachusetts of cerebral embolism after serving as President Roosevelt's personal secretary for more than twenty years. The White House announced the death today.

Pvt Robert L Jenkins 19 son of Mrs Myrtle Jenkins of 4225 Loudoun street Winchester died in action in France on July 3. Born January 19 1925 in Rappahannock county he lived in Winchester 16 years and worked as a tree surgeon before enlisting May 4 1943. He trained at Camp Croft S C and sailed overseas earlier this year with the 29th Division. He is survived by his mother two sisters Mrs John Lowery and Mrs Arthur Streit and a brother Petty Officer Clifton Jenkins in Rhode Island.
The Chinese high command admitted July 31 that Japanese forces penetrated Hengyang city proper. Brisk fighting raged inside the city and on its outskirts as Japanese troops pressed the Canton Hankow railway junction contest, with Chinese forces fighting to halt the attackers on the encircled front.

Edward L. Lupton 78, last of a pioneer fruit growing family, died Saturday night at 625 South Stewart Street after months of illness. He leaves wife Missina Fries Lupton and daughter Sarah Margaret. son Jameson Lupton is deceased. Funeral Tuesday at 2 PM from the family home with Rev. William E. Eisenberg officiating. interment at Hebron Cemetery.
