Bulgaria to Pay Compensation for Downed Airliner

Israel reports Bulgaria pledged to compensate for the El Al jet that was shot down near the Greek Bulgarian border killing 58 people including 12 Americans. A Bulgarian note expressed readiness to cover material damage after investigations. six Israeli investigators were denied entry, though Baruch Nir visited the crash site. The El Al statement says Bulgaria’s account is inconsistent with radio and ground reports and calls for permission for Israeli investigators.

Faulty Shell Kills Three Paratroopers At Camp A P Hill

A 60 millimeter mortar shell exploded during a training exercise at Camp A P Hill Virginia killing three paratroopers and wounding two more. The dead and injured were from the 325th Airborne Infantry Regiment 82nd Division based at Fort Bragg North Carolina on loan to the 2nd Army for summer camp. Casualties were taken to the Marine Hospital at Quantico and names withheld pending next of kin notification.

Adams Family Receives Master Farm Family Award

The Ernest W. Adams Jr family of near Gainesboro earns Virginia Master Farm Family honors, first from Frederick County. Joint sponsors Virginia Tech extension service and Progressive Farmer magazine rate the Adams as top in family life farm operations and community involvement. The award follows a 1000 point scorecard across four categories. The Adams own a two story eight room farmhouse with outbuildings on US Route 50. The family includes Mr Adams 40 Mrs Adams 38 and children E W Adams II 16 and Mary Catherine 17. E W Adams II attends James Wood High School and helps on the farm during summers after studio work.

Fire destroys infirmary. 90 nuns rescued in Dubuque

Ninety elderly nuns, some ill, were rescued when a fire swept the Mount Carmel Convent infirmary in Dubuque. An attic explosion was reported shortly after 10 pm. Fire crews fought for over an hour and a half. the roof collapsed about 45 minutes after outbreak. only minor injuries were reported.

Eisenhower OKs Planned Artificial Satellite Launch

President Eisenhower approves a plan to launch an unmanned artificial earth satellite for scientific purposes. The White House says objects would orbit 200 to 300 miles up at about 18000 mph, remain days or weeks, then disintegrate. Information indicates satellites could be launched by 1957 or 1958 for global scientific use.

No Developments Reported in Strike at Brick Plant

No changes occurred at Shenandoah Brick and Tile Company on Smithfield Ave as the mid day strike continued. Two men arrested yesterday on charges related to detaining workers posted bond and were released. Pickets remained, the plant said it was hiring more workers and operating normally with no disturbances since Wednesday. Local causes cited include union organization efforts and pay dissatisfaction. Plant manager Barr pledged a statement soon, while union representative Tavagalione had none to offer.
