The Wall Street Journal reports a survey of 70 major U.S. companies finding executives expect no war. Most leaders see no need to plan for an emergency and few have taken steps such as stocking materials or listing recallable workers amid the Berlin crisis.
A woman walked into police headquarters asking where to pay a red light fine. Patrolman Earl Hughes asked for her ticket. She said no one saw her run the light and produced no paperwork.

Roy Sheetz of Bunker Hill was trapped after his car collided with a box car near Plumly Street. Rescue crews worked over an hour to free him using a forklift, porta power saws, and cutting the car roof after noting he remained conscious and unharmed beyond abrasions and bruises. He was taken to Memorial Hospital, treated, and released.
The P. W. Plumly fork lift lifted the box car to free Mr. Sheetz while the Shade wrecker cleared wreckage from the track. The victim's leg was pinned near the steering wheel. Rescue teams used power tools to reach in and remove the shoe. Doctors Monford Custer and James Troxell assisted. Winchester police and state troopers P. W. Foster and H. K. Malbon also assisted at the scene.
Police Chief Bruce Farley said the downtown racial clash last night involved bottles and a shotgun but was not serious. He noted a small white group and a similar sized Black group, few injuries, and the fight ending before officers arrived as firemen cleaned broken glass.
A federal judge said the Virginia Supreme Court must decide whether Prince Edward County public schools were closed to avoid integration and whether the state and county had the right to close them. Judge Oren R. Lewis noted reopening was not ordered and the case runs through its 10th year as arguments continued.
