A 29 inch central southern Japan storm on Kyushu left at least 253 dead and 800 missing with Isa hay a Isahaya city submerged and Omura floodbound. Railways and highways collapsed as relief teams and naval assets aided rescue efforts while officials warned the toll could rise.
On March 5 1814 a large part of Winchester’s residents gathered to cheer the town’s artillery company as it left for Norfolk for three months of War of 1812 duty. Capt Vanhorne’s Pughtown Rifles and Col W Henry Beatty led the march with 51 artillerymen in the First Battalion 31st Virginia Militia. The unit, praised as largely unmarried and vigorous, faced a deadly climate in Tidewater and would suffer many casualties before returning.
In Lovington Virginia State Senator Robert Whitehead calls for one half of an anticipated general fund surplus of about five to seven million dollars to be used for school construction loans. He proposes the funding come from the Literary Fund and urges emergency legislation in the 1958 session. He notes education cries crisis and cites comptroller figures showing revenues exceeding estimates.
Virginia farmers face continued drought with Prince William Fauquier and Norfolk counties seeking federal disaster designation. Weatherman projects little rain July 27 31 with scattered showers likely under one fifth inch. Officials warn crop damage could grow with 50 percent of eastern corn lost and forage depleted.
In Cairo a five story building collapsed during a wedding party, killing 63 and injuring 32. Fatma the veiled bride in a white dress died among the dead and Mansour Abdel Hamid was badly hurt. The aged structure had been ordered demolished but owner added three stories.
Former President Harry S Truman has sworn off autographing $1 bills at the Truman Memorial Library. A visitor asked for his signature, but Truman declined noting you cannot deface currency and joking the attorney general would love to jail him. He said no official caution had been given.
Burlingame California. Catherine Elvins, 20, daughter of a Seattle physician, was beaten with a flatiron and stabbed 20 times. Her roommate Elaine Soule, 19, of Freeport New York confessed to murder with robbery as motive and described plans to discard the body in a trunk. Soule failed to cash the $160 family check after the slaying and told police she acted to pay pressing debts.
Dr John Bodkin Adams, a 50 year old physician from Lewes England, was fined 2400 pounds totaling 6720 dollars after pleading guilty to 14 of 16 charges involving larceny cremation forgery and dangerous drugs. He admitted four counts of forging National Health prescriptions and other fraudulent acts while contesting two related counts.
Mrs. George R. Parnell delivers a son at Lynchburg General Hospital while her husband, hurt by walking into a plate glass window, recovers in the emergency room. The couple’s baby arrives Wednesday night and both parents are reported fine. The item also notes a local farm ad and a corrected cigarette price.
Sen Russell warns Southerners will use every weapon in their arsenal to block the civil rights bill unless a jury trial amendment is added. The debate centers on a jury trial provision for contempt cases tied to the voting rights enforcement, with Eisenhower opposing major changes. The administration bill already lost a section empowering federal court injunctions beyond voting rights.
The White House said President Eisenhower greatly disappointed as the House failed to pass a 1.2 billion dollar school construction aid bill by a five vote margin. Democrats blamed the President while Republicans offered mixed verdicts as the measure died after votes including an anti segregation amendment.

Federal District Judge John Paul said he would withhold enforcement of his desegregation order for Charlottesville public schools until the Supreme Court rules on Virginia's pupil placement act.
Mary Callie Hill sues Miss Maryland sponsor Walters Academy and Fashion Guild claiming fraud hid Mrs. Ennis's marriage to win the Miss U.S.A. title. Hill says the scheme cost her a trophy trip to Miss U.S.A., an automobile, a $1,000 wardrobe and a screen test.
