Allied forces battled Viet Cong and North Vietnamese troops around Saigon and uncovered weapons caches near the capital. In other actions, a Viet Cong company burned a village 15 miles southeast of Da Nang, leaving 1,400 homeless.
A new group Citizens for a Progressive Front Royal plans to circulate petitions seeking a local option vote on liquor by the drink. The drive aims to collect signatures equal to 15 percent of the 1964 presidential ballots to meet legal requirements.
The Wesley Chapel Yard Party committee seeks odd items for a Saturday auction and wrote to congressmen and Mrs. Lyndon B. Johnson. They received an autographed engraving of the White House from Mrs. Johnson. Auction begins at 6 p.m. after a 5 p.m. start for the event.

Czechoslovak Communist sources say talks with the Kremlin are forthcoming and the Soviet led pressure on reformist Dubcek is expected to continue for months. The Politburo visit to Czechoslovakia is unconfirmed with Prague seeking venue on its soil and no official word on timing or location.
A plan by the Southern Christian Leadership Conference to ship fourteen mules three horses and seven wagons from the Mule Train to the Republican Convention in Miami Beach and then to the Democratic Convention in Chicago is proposed to remind delegates of the poor. Abe Morrisett cites shifting instructions and notes the plan may not be final. Five animals were released to HSUS, one was destroyed, and others will go to Memphis with Mack Woods.
In Paris Harriman told North Vietnamese negotiators that progress depends on recognizing South Vietnam's government in the settlement. He noted renewed Viet Cong theater bombings near Saigon killing 12 and wounding 91 as peace talks resume. He planned to cite Johnson and Thieu’s Honolulu appeal for a peaceful settlement and seek signs of North Vietnamese flexibility. He also pressed questions about North Vietnam's support for the National Liberation Front.
