Area farmers oppose wheat restrictions echoed nationally while bankers cite steady growth in Winchester banks assets. From June 1953 to June 1956 total assets rose from 24.1 million to 30.8 million with new industries and population increases driving growth. quarterly shifts reflect seasonal farming expenditures and harvest inflows.
Virginia voters backed federal wheat quotas with 769 in favor and 139 against statewide. Frederick eight yes seven no, Clarke 18 yes 29 no, Loudoun tied. National results: 226,839 yes 32,767 no, 87.5 percent approval. Quotas aim to limit production for a stable price of about $2 per bushel next year.

Carol Morris, 20, of Ottumwa Iowa, was named Miss Universe 1957 after winning Miss United States and defeating 14 contestants in Long Beach California. Her prize includes a six month film contract at $250 weekly. Her father the Rev LaVerne Morris carried a penny in his shoe for luck.
Torrential rains and high winds swamp central and western Maryland. Six people drowned in the Rockville area and eight others perished in traffic accidents. Flooding forced hundreds from homes, stranded motorists, and damaged properties along the Washington suburbs, Keedysville, and Daniel near Ellicott City. One drowned firefighter Elwood H. Smith, 32, of Rockville. Police recovered five unidentified African Americans in a washed vehicle on Wightman Road in Montgomery County.
National Chairman Leonard W. Hall predicted Eisenhower would win at least four Southern states in November. He spoke at the Virginia Republican state convention and said the South is key to the party’s future growth and that Virginia will deliver its electoral votes for Eisenhower and Nixon with a larger majority than in 1952. Hall praised the new Virginia Republican party and noted the decline of one party Democrat politics in the South.

He travels a 44 mile daily route excluding Sundays and holidays, serving since August 1920 with annual mileage over 13 500. The award was presented by Stephens City Postmaster Lemley.
