The Big Three held their fifth meeting at Potsdam with reports of much serious business completed. Truman, Churchill, and Stalin pushed daily talks, with committees drafting reports for action as they seek quick, practical decisions and an early return.
U S submarines sank 11 enemy ships in Far Eastern waters, including four small combat vessels such as two minesweepers and two patrol escort craft. Non combatant craft in the tally included cargo transports and merchant vessels, raising the total Japanese ships sunk to 1,174 since the war began.
The Winchester Steam Laundry will close on July 26 27 and 28 with no laundry collections after July 24. The notice mentions an alternative service from Clear Laundry.
A British foreign office spokesman said it is not within Britain’s power to waive Suez Canal tolls for American war ships. He noted the canal is partly owned by Britain and others, while the Panama Canal is American owned. Officials in Washington said the U.S. has asked Britain to absorb Suez tolls under reverse lend lease as U.S. tolls have totaled 11.345 million dollars through last January. Britain pays tolls on its own ships through Suez.
In Richmond on July 21, Charles Amenefee chief of police Front Royal Virginia and D Wheeling deputy sheriff Prince William County Manassas were graduated from the FBI National Police Academy in Washington announced by Director J Edgar Hoover. Attor ney General Tom C Clark and Thomas I Parkinson spoke to the class, the 29th session of the academy.
Daily air raids hit Honshu with American fighters and bombers. Shanghai air defense and shipping targets attacked for a second day as 200 Far East Air Force planes operate. Joseph William Brumback, noted county farmer and fruit grower, died at 8 10 p m in Winchester Memorial Hospital at age 81 after a major operation. Born June 20 1864 in Page County he moved to Frederick County in 1883 and became a leading local farmer and horticulturist. He leaves a son Bryan and four brothers, with his wife Bessie Burner predeceasing him. He was a Primitive Baptist Church member in Marlboro.
Chinese forces beat down Japanese counterattacks near Kweilin as Chinese columns push from Kwangsi with three sided pressure. High command reports Japanese effort to move from Amoy toward Swatow and recapture Chieh Sou. Casualties noted in Fukien near Yunsiao as threats along the Hunan Kwangsi line persist.
Capricious winds fanned Oregon fires as the Wilson river blaze expanded by 10,000 acres in 48 hours to over 46,000 acres. Salmonberry and spot fires near Tillamook-Washington line spread under smoke as crews battled hot embers and feared rain could help containment. Refugees from Glenwood migrated toward Forest Grove as townsfolk fought to evacuate families.
Strikes and walkouts keep about 50 000 idle in the nation with new stoppages adding 10 000 to the list. Detroit reports 24 600 idle, including 14 000 at 200 lumber yards. Ohio sees a Wright Aeronautical walkout spreading, delaying 4 000 workers. Warren Ohio faces bus and telephone service disruptions. Seagram distillery workers join the idle ranks in Louisville as more plants suspend operations.
A Tokyo Asahi report cited by the FCC claims Japan’s scrap iron supply shifted from private gathering to organized import via war production, aided by advancing technology. It notes the plant output now meets demand, with B 29 deliveries supplying metal directly to vendors if needed.
In St Charles Virginia the Rev Bill Parsons leader of the Stone Creek faith healing sect says the season's first snakebite victims are Bill Gibson near Tazewell Tennessee and Luther Myer of Cleveland Tennessee bitten in services last Sunday Gibson is in poor condition and Myer in serious condition Parsons promises more snakes and hotter torches for tomorrow's demonstrations noting snakes are more dangerous during the next 40 days and that two sect members have died this summer from bites.
Prime Minister Churchill saluted the British Seventh Armored Division in Berlin as they marched through the Tiergarten, with generals Marshall King Arnold Gorbatov and De Beauchesne nearby. Attlee and Eden stood with civilians cheering as Churchill praised the force’s long road to victory and wished the Desert Rats glory.

Lawrence Lawson a 44 year old Washington steeplejack dangled from a flax pole 260 feet above Richmond for over an hour while rescuers and firemen brought him down He planned to finish the job untangling flagpole ropes despite a potential setback and was described as not seriously injured though in hospital with unclear injuries.
General MacArthur announces big air attacks on Shanghai to strike at Japan's invasion hub in East Asia. The raids target the heart of Chinese and foreign interests, aiming to degrade Japan's war machine and boost Chinese resolve as Allied prisoners are spared by careful bombing near camps at Woosung Taochang Tinghai Kiangwan Lunghwa.
MONDORF Luxembourg July 21 Reichsmarshall Hermann Goering’s sedative intake is being reduced in the Palace hotel infirmary where he is confined. Col. B C Andrus said Goering took 20 times normal paracodeine on arrival to join Von Ribbentrop Doenitz and 49 Nazis. He scowled as pills were reduced.
