Valley Turnpike Reduces Tolls and Reconstructs Roads
The Valley Turnpike Company held its annual meeting in Winchester with President H F Byrd reporting that wooden bridges from Winchester to Staunton have been rebuilt with steel and concrete. Tolls for buggy and wagon travel were cut by 40 percent effective September 1, and rates for four horse teams dropped from eighteen to ten cents per five miles. A franchise was granted to the Winchester and Western Railroad to cross the turnpike south of Winchester with trains limited to five miles per hour at crossing.
