Roosevelt accepts third term nomination at Chicago Democratic Convention amid tumult and cheers. He pledges service in danger, warns against appeasement, and cautions against untried hands next January while Secretary Wallace is named as running mate. Mrs Roosevelt attends, her feelings noted.

In Chicago on July 19 James A Farley was reelected chairman of the Democratic National Committee by acclamation for a temporary term ending August 17 A five member sub committee will pick a successor after discussions with President Roosevelt Farley pledged support for the party ticket and aims to aid the November election. Roosevelt favors Frank C Walker as possible successor with Byrnes also mentioned as a candidate if Walker declines.
Ma Winchester notes the genial governor Homer A Holt of West Virginia, a Washington and Lee alumnus and faculty member, now serving four years as chief administrator. She praises his administration and mentions Shenandoah Valley visits and Greenbrier county roots. W. Erle Edwards, Frederick county commonwealth attorney, had an emergency appendectomy at Winchester Memorial Hospital this morning. His condition this afternoon was reported satisfactory. He was ill only briefly before entering the hospital and was at his office yesterday.
In a Washington radio address the President said he would accept a history making third term if drafted by the people in November. Roosevelt spoke from the White House oval room wearing a coat then shed it to speak in shirt sleeves, amid muggy midsummer heat. He told Secretary Wallace by phone to come to Chicago, and planned to return to Hyde Park for a few days after the convention.
The twenty-eighth Democratic National Convention adjourned after a revolt against President Roosevelt’s choice of former Republican Henry Wallace as vice presidential nominee. Wallace drew about 40 percent of votes, with heavy opposition from Southern and Western leaders. Speaker Bankhead and others criticized the ticket as the party’s cabinet being too Republican.
A freight train loaded with sand derailed on the Winchester and Western line nine miles south of Gore. An engine and five cars ran amuck on the mountain near a sand mine injuring or damaging track. Continued on page 9.

Mexico reported near completion of negotiations to build an oil pipeline to sell petroleum to Japan. The plan hinges on U S approval due to United States objections to a New York construction firm participation.
A Berlin sourced German spokesman warned of reprisals against persons in German occupied Holland over alleged mistreatment of Germans in the Dutch East and West Indies. He blamed East and West Indian authorities for the incident and claimed Europeans in colonies face poor treatment by others. The action would target German individuals in overseas possessions.

He warned a world empire would fall if Churchill persists, insisting no Churchill will be left in Britain and noting twofold aims with Italy and England.
