Man Receives Twenty Lashes For Wife Beating

Winfield Scott Knight was sentenced by Justice Reinhold J. Haim in Hagerstown to receive twenty lashes on the bare back for beating his wife. The frail 75 pound woman was struck with a measuring stick after being pulled from an invalid’s couch. Six witnesses testified as Knight admitted the assault. The lashes will be administered by the sheriff while Knight is handcuffed. Knight fled into Virginia with his wife and child before being captured near Bunker Hill, West Virginia. He told the court his wife blamed him for jealousy and alleged intimacy with another woman. His wife said she planned to consult a doctor, and Knight claimed this was his second marriage while she called it his fourth. Eight men have been whipped in Washington county for wife beating since the law passed. Maximum penalty is 40 lashes and one year in prison.
