More than 100 white Cambridge businessmen gathered at the National Guard Armory to protest militia restrictions as Col J Maurice Tawes oversaw 400 troops. A spokesman claimed up to 1 000 would march later to condemn the release of 14 Negro detainees.
The Winchester Frederick County Chamber will host Dr. Ernesto Mino of Ambato Ecuador for a three day visit sponsored by the American Municipal Assn. He will tour local sites including the Handley Library and a local bank.
The regular Chamber of Commerce board meeting is set for 6 30 this evening in Lee Jackson Resturant. C G Follansbee chamber manager says it should be a routine session. A muscular Dystrophy Carnival runs tomorrow and Thursday at Round Hill Community Center with games and an auction at 8 pm Thursday.
Frederick County Firemen's Association held a meeting at Stephens City Fire Hall to discuss fund raising for a series of events. A training film on flammable liquids was shown. Upcoming events include yard parties parades and carnivals in Stephens City Round Hill Shawnee Gore with dates in July and August.
Senate Democratic Leader Mike Mansfield said progress in talks among the president Kennedy and labor and management groups could avert a walkout. A presidential board may report by Monday with legislation to head off a strike, with both sides to hold action for a week to July 29 as the board weighs featherbedding claims.
Police dispersed a mob in Detroit after a fatal shooting of 18 year old Kennedy Evans sparked protests that drew about 600 demonstrators earlier. Six people faced riot incitement investigations and five were briefly hospitalized with minor injuries.
By KEITH STICKLEY Star Staff Writer more than 67 local residents offered blood to aid a 45 year old veteran in need of an open heart operation. The Bloodmobile opened at 10 am at Parish House and 22 pints of A positive blood were collected by a car from the Washington Regional Red Cross Blood Center for transport to Washington and then to the veterans hospital for a 4 pm operation. By noon 85 donors had offered a pint each and many stayed or planned to return this afternoon. Lions Club representatives assisted as sponsors.
Mrs. Ethel D. Goodman, 74, died after an elevator accident at the Park Way Hotel 9 E. Piccadilly St. She rushed to aid her grandson Gregg, 2, who started the elevator. The shaft, rescue cuts, and motor smoke delayed freeing the boy and repairing the car.
About 65 civil rights demonstrators marched to Troy City Hall to protest a proposed year round dog leash ordinance. The march began at the library and covered five blocks to the city council meeting as several dogs joined the procession. The council committee tabled the discussion until the next meeting.
Moscow and Beijing pressed for an end to the stalemate in their peace talks as both sides accused the other of splitting the world Communist bloc. Neither delegation appeared at the Lenin Hills house, and Beijing and Moscow traded sharp criticisms in state media over Sino Soviet relations and aid to India.
Senator Byrd will lead the annual Byrd picnic at Rosemont Orchard on Saturday August 31 with a noon barbecue luncheon for about 3000. Virginia West Virginia Maryland and Pennsylvania apple growers and buyers will attend along with W L Blackstone of the Independent Grocers Alliance. Dr Ancell B Groves of Winchester Research Laboratory is guest of honor for his years of service to the apple industry.
A 13-year-old youth Preston I. Moffett Jr. and K F Shumate 44 of Armel sustained eye injuries in separate mishaps yesterday. The boy suffered a lacerated left eye from glass at Merriman's Lane and is listed in satisfactory condition at Winchester Memorial Hospital. Shumate was injured when a part fell from beneath the car he was repairing and is reported in good condition.
In Senate testimony Governor George Wallace of Alabama declared he would not help enforce or promote compliance with a federal public accommodations bill. He said he would focus on running Alabama and let federal agents handle enforcement, arguing it would require an army to enforce racial integration in restaurants motels and theaters.
The Leon Gillis family of Richmond travels in a Conestoga wagon with six children hoping to reach Moscow via Washington New York Rotterdam and Europe. They previously crossed America in 1961 62 with horse Gracie and a single horse dying en route. They plan 3500 miles across France Germany to reach Moscow before winter.
The Post Office Department launches vertical improved mail or VIM in the Crown Zellerbach Building San Francisco as a pilot to speed delivery in large offices. A survey targets nearly 300 cities to expand VIM nationwide under the NIMS program alongside ZIP and ABCD.
In Moscow U S Undersecretary Harriman and Lord Hailsham meet Foreign Minister Gromyko amid guarded optimism on a test ban formula. A Soviet official says talks seem satisfactory as negotiators push toward a mutual agreement and discuss disarmament and Laos tension.
Warren Page and Rockingham counties farmers join 33 others in 35 counties certified to buy government owned feed grains at reduced prices. The move follows a state request for aid as land yields drop this year. Grain will be sold at not less than 75 percent of the port price to eligible farmers.
