Winchester Aging Rapidly Spurs Council Discussion
Winchester is aging faster than nearby areas in the Lord Fairfax Planning District, said Michael M. Toht of the Shenandoah Area Agency on Aging. The agency noted 3,642 residents over 60, about 19 percent of the population, with 6 percent from minority groups and 659 elderly below the poverty line. The agency plans to expand nutrition services, convert meal sites to multipurpose senior centers, and add a mini bus transportation system, while evaluating overall services. The Winchester site will move to four days of meals weekly, at Christ Episcopal Church, and the agency seeks a $390,580 budget with local contributions totaling $3,000.
