Fire at Audley Farm Claims Dozens of Horses in 1960s Style Resumes
A blaze at Audley Farm near Berryville killed 13 horses in a 420 foot training barn just yesterday. Ten years earlier a similar fire destroyed the same building, killing 37 horses and prompting a costly rebuild. Noting past incidents, the owner was away in Europe as yesterday’s fire began, with Grayson and Jeff Greer among the first on scene aiding evacuation. A separate 1968 lightning fire destroyed a 16 stall barn without fatalities. Edwards, then president of Wheeling Downs, led racing circles through related losses in 1962.
