Virginians vote in a U S Senate primary described as critical to the Byrd era and party control. Democrats sought the party’s nominations for both Senate seats amid a turnout labeled light to deep by observers.
AP reports Virginians urged to vote in the Democratic primary as incumbents A Willis Robertson and Harry F Byrd Jr face challenge from Armistead L Boothe and William B Spong Jr. Gravatt and Andrews back the Byrd Robertson ticket amid strong party and ideological divides.
The Associated Press reports a ongoing heat wave across the eastern two thirds of the U.S. with temperatures in the 100s. Two major power outages affected Nebraska and St. Louis due to heavy air conditioning use. St. Louis saw a 106 degree reading and an emergency power cut by Union Electric. Tornado activity near Pierre followed by 110 degree in Huron and high winds across Minnesota and Wisconsin accompanied the heat.
