Pittsburgh area miners return to soft coal pits as AFL United Mine Workers contracts lift wages. Prices rise 70 to 75 cents a ton with strip coal up 40 to 50 cents. Pittsburgh Consolidated Coal Co raises rates pending a month long study. Retail merchants may also lift prices Monday.
A State board of corrections report shows Winchester jail held 79 inmates in May. Of the 31-day tally 66 whites and 13 Negroes. total inmates for the 11-month period rose to 161 in 1945-46 comparisons, with Clarke County tally 33 inmates in May.
Athens reports Greece’s fugitive communist leader Nicholas Zachariades called for the creation of a free democratic government in free areas. Government troops pressed a heavy drive against guerrillas in the northwest with heavy casualties reported on Mount Grammos near the Albanian border.

In Danvers Massachusetts on July 12 a nine year old boy named Johnny Cragon was pulled into the water by a large catch while fishing for mackerel. A passing motorist pulled him out and Johnny said he had no idea what hit his line.
Six Negro convicts died and eight were wounded when guards and police opened fire as 27 inmates charged a 12 foot fence at a Georgia prison camp near Brunswick. Warden Worthy identified Willie Bell as the inciter. two hospitalized inmates died later. State investigators were sent to probe the incident.
