Florence to Inspect Ancient Ponte Vecchio Bridge
Florence will temporarily divert the Arno this summer to allow experts to inspect Ponte Vecchio. The 14th century bridge, rebuilt in 1345 after Roman origins, survived the 1944 German withdrawal but earlier cracks prompted caution. Foundations will be laid for rebuilding Ponte Santa Trinita and Ponte alla Carraia.

London Truckers Strike Paralyzes City Food Supply
A wildcat strike by 1,400 Smithfield Market drivers halted meat shipments in London for 17 days, threatening 4.4 million people. The Army moved in to handle perishable meat, as 25,000 truckers were expected idle and 5,000 did not show up. Arthur Deakin blamed communist agitators, while organizers denied the claim.
