President Roosevelt stated he would accept the Democratic renomination and serve a fourth term if elected. He told reporters he would not seek the role but would obey the people if the convention and voters demanded continued leadership during the war.
A U S Army nurse from Waukesha Wisconsin attends a wounded German prisoner evacuated from a Cherbourg hospital. Lt Sally Lou Strong provides encouragement with a Yankee smile as the injured Nazi receives care. Lt Alexander Vraciu of East Chicago Ind is credited with shooting down 19 Japanese planes in Pacific actions. In a Saipan air battle he downed fifteen Jap planes in one day using under 300 bullets.
American and British Canadian units push toward St Lo and Caen area under heavy artillery fire. Columns advance from Carentan and the Vire river sectors, seizing several small towns as Bradley's First Army nears Luzerne and Mesnil-Roxelin amid a 40 mile front assault.
Soviet forces under Col. Gen. Bagramian drove a wedge into Lithuania cutting toward Kaunas and nearing Riga while advancing from Daugavpils. Rokossovsky’s First White Army occupied Luninieg near Pinsk and Slonim as other columns skirt the Pripyat Marshes driving toward Pinsk and Bialystok amid broader Romanian and Baltic moves.
A sky darkening force of about 2000 American aircraft attacked the Munich area as Liberators struck Toulon from Italy and Mosquitos bombed Berlin. The raid marked the second major Allied strike on the Reich in five days with heavy bomber and fighter formations, while weather forced high altitude runs and troops faced intense anti aircraft fire.
United States naval and air forces struck Guam and Rota over the weekend as the Marianas near complete neutralization. The 5th Army used 64 750 000 pounds of ammunition against the Gustav line below Cassino in May. The Foreign Economic Administration says Germany faces substantial defeat risk in 1944 or 1945 as Allied strikes reduce war materiel.
Damage to Winchester Golf Club property by non members was reported to police. The board of directors met to police property and handle offenders, noting that only members may access grounds and guests need executive committee permission and a special fee for parties. Feminine caddies are featured for the Byrd trophy with female players at the club this summer.

Pvt. Francis B. Williams, 23, was killed in action in Italy on June 3. His wife Mildred received the War Department telegram on June 19. Survived by his parents Mr. and Mrs. Bedford Williams Strasburg and by his widow and two young children La Rue Fay and Francis Bedford Jr. He had last mailed May 28 from Italy after training at Fort McClellan and service since November 11 1943.
