The report notes 237 dead or missing after a Portuguese transport ship Save grounded and burned off Lourenco Marques Mozambique. The vessel carried many African passengers and the tragedy prompted official statements from the Portuguese Maritime Ministry.
The Associated Press reports 12 people died on Virginia roads in two separate wrecks within 21 hours. Five killed near Bottoms Bridge when two cars collided, eight churchgoers among passengers. Four more died at a grade crossing near burg as the Atlantic Coast Everglades Limited struck the auto, dragging occupants.
The column notes July rainfall totals of .86 inches for Independence and .03 inches elsewhere, with .18 inches at Dr. Hough’s Fairmont Ave. lab site. Ralph D. In Arguello California AP reports the United States first attempt to launch a missile alarm satellite into a high orbit failed at 8:59 am. A 98 foot projectile did not lift from its pad and ignition of the Atlas booster engine failed. Observers saw a fire, smoke and the booster exhausted. The satellite stage remained on the pad as the mission collapsed.
Confederate and Federal forces fought a skirmish at Laurel Hill. Details are sparse but reports indicate localized engagement with small arms fire and tactical movement around the hill’s terrain. No decisive outcome reported.
In Moscow at Tushino Airfield the Soviet air force staged a large parade before about 50 000 spectators. New fighters bombers and helicopters were shown including a jet fighter with air to air rockets and an air to surface missiles armed bombers and a vertical takeoff proposed screw wing craft. A giant helicopter carried 180 men as a flypast featured 15 helicopters each with a trapeze and dancer in national costume.
The Star reports a collision on U S 21 involving a 1959 Ford and a 1960 Plymouth. Dr. Racey and Mrs. Racey were hospitalized with severe facial wounds and jaw injuries. Otmar Simpson, the other driver, and his son Wesley were injured. Simpson was charged with driving left of center.
Eddie Thomas Williams aged 41 of 417 Duncan Ave Front Royal died after being struck by a 1955 Ford on Rt 55 near Front Royal at 9 45 p m He had stepped from a parked car onto the highway and the driver Harry Stribling 22 of Creek was to be charged with involuntary manslaughter. The body was taken to Seventeon Funeral Home Front Royal and funeral arrangements were pending A separate report noted a second accident at the scene with no details and several injuries in the Winchester area over the weekend including Theodore Wright 22 of Marshall and Michael Thomas Reardon of White Post in vehicle incidents on Rt 22 and Rt 50.
Incumbent E. Blackburn Moore of Winchester seeks re nomination while Berryville attorney Stuart E. Brown Jr. challenges him. Moore has chaired the State Water Control Board and backed tax reform and education funding. Brown emphasizes a Pay as you go fiscal approach amid a busy campaign.
Area voters will find nine names on the Pia ballots for the Democratic primary. Frederick and Clarke County polls open 6 am to 7 pm standard time. Winchester polls run 7 am to 8 pm daylight time. State law sets 6 am to 7 pm, but Winchester observes local time 7 to 8 pm.

Washington AP Secretary of Defense Robert McNamara said the Soviet Union plans to increase its military forces, and the United States will take a new look at its defense program. He called for precautionary measures amid the rising arms posture.
