Taft Sees U S Naval Base in Ireland Debate

Senator Taft told the Senate he heard weeks ago of a U S naval air base being built in northern Ireland for Great Britain and urged discussing bases in Ireland and Scotland. He argued such a move could free British troops and deploy Americans. Senator Connally defended presidential authority to move forces for defense. Winchester bicycle license plan moves to enforcement

Troopers Quell Riot in Coal Region

A detachment of at least 150 state troopers patrolled the lower anthracite region, as power shovels resumed stripping operations halted by miners. About 13 men were wounded by buckshot and 20 more bruised, in clashes that included a two-hour battle between 2,000 miners and company police. Authorities opened investigations as a mass meeting vowed to halt surface mining.

German Division Reported Wiped Out Near Lepel

The Red Army breached the German Baltic flank and reportedly wiped out a motorized division near Lepel, possibly 15,000 men, and struck a second division south of Borisov on the Berenzina river. A fierce air battle ended with the Soviets claiming 38 German planes shot down and no losses.

Artillerymen Rescue Three Women Off Fort Story Beach

July 10 Fort Story Va soldiers from Battery PF Test Coast Artillery dived into rough surf during maneuvers to save three young women swept by an undertow. Battery F joined the rescue as a unit and retrieved all three after a heavy surf struggle. Three rescuers were later towed in on a telephone line used during the maneuvers.
