In a tense political scene the West Virginia contest resolves with a single candidate gaining unanimous support. The article notes opposition figures W. J. Bryan and W. G. McAdoo were unavailable, affecting the tally and the final outcome.
At Madison Square Garden on July 9 the Democratic convention neared nominating Davis and hinted at offering Walsh the vice presidency. Davis built support with West Virginia and Alaska boosts while Underwood and others shifted ballots. McAdoo and other candidates trailed on the one hundred and second roll call.
At Madison Square Garden the West Virginian John W. Davis surged into the lead on the 101st ballot as McAdoo and Smith forces fractured. Davis gained with state shifts from Maryland Virginia Texas New York and California while Underwood and Meredith gained elsewhere. The convention debated strategy as McAdoo refused to withdraw and Smith aides prepared for further ballot changes.
The Star announces a two day Dollar Day sale in Winchester with 15 thousand special editions July 14 and 15 to promote bargains by 40 leading merchants and local banks. Readership in northern Virginia and nearby West Virginia will receive 24 page Star editions to advertise discounted stock and pre list shopping tips.
Washington news reports the simple service for Calvin Coolidge Jr at the White House East Room with family bearing and hymns. The body to be moved to Mass for private services and burial near Plymouth Vermont, with local townsfolk pausing as the funeral train passes Northampton Massachusetts en route.
One of Winchester’s largest funerals was held for Newton M. Smaltz who died Monday at his daughter's home and was buried at Mount Hebron after service at Grace Church. The rites were led by Rev. A A Kelley and Rev. George W Stover with local and regional attendees from Berkeley County and Washington County. Pallbearers included J Few Brown Edward Lupton Harry Schmidt Harry Keshley O T Ritter and J C Davis.
The Company I 116th Infantry Virginia National Guard calls for 80 volunteers at the Legion Building to join a 15 day summer encampment at the beach. Recruits will be paid and provided for. muster on Sunday July 13. Captain George H Grimm urges enlistment.
Harry K Thaw and his mother Mrs Mary C Thaw arrived in Winchester to view the new estate Thaw recently purchased five miles from town. Builders and decorators are preparing the house for a move planned around July 24 with flowers in the hotel suite and a nurse in attendance.
Rotary Club holds a regular luncheon at 1 pm tomorrow in the George Washington Hotel assembly hall. All July meetings move from the Farmers and Merchants National Bank building to the George Washington Hotel.
Regular monthly meeting of the G A A is set for Thursday July 10 at 7 30 in the Club Room All members are urged to attend.
