A Tropical Disease Now Found in the United States
Dr. Herman N. Bundesen describes amebiasis or amebic dysentery, noting its presence in about 10 percent of Americans. Symptoms range from mild intestinal irritation to severe diarrhea, with possible liver abscesses and spread to other organs. Diagnosis requires finding parasites in stool, with fresh samples or proctoscope examination. Treatment uses iodine and arsenic compounds, and emetine for liver abscesses with bed rest and caution in heart disease cases.
