Neighbors found a decomposed female body near a Star Tannery grave after a hand protruded from the earth. Officials, including Sheriff Pannett, exhumed the grave amid murder charges against Kermit Orndorff and Wayne McIlwee.
A badly decomposed body believed to be Frances Nicholas Orndorff was found in a mountainside grave near Star Tannery Frederick County. Sheriff Pannett and officers removed the body for identification and autopsy while authorities said Kermit Orndorff and Wayne Pete McKlwee would be arrested if found.
Beatrice Webb, 70, after a Soviet tour, says Russian women overuse lipstick. She calls for a communist decree banning cosmetics, claiming rouge and powder reflect decadent capitalism and are immoral. She praises Russian complexions and argues cosmetics are unnecessary.
A Southern Railway passenger train from Harrisonburg struck a defective switch at Dephna near Broadway. Engineer Robert Good and Fireman Coon were severely scalded but survived. Virginia State Police announce a statewide driver permit test program starting Monday July 11 at 9 a.m. for youths aged 14 to 16 and newcomers with under 500 miles driving. Reports from Hongkong say the destroyer Feiging was bombed and sunk at Hoihow by four Cantonese aircraft on Wednesday. Twenty sailors were killed in the raid and the aviators who carried out the bombing reportedly received about $70,000 as a reward for crippling a major vessel.
The Democratic organization in Virginia marshaled its forces for the approaching national elections. J. Murray Hooker, chairman of the State Democratic Committee, predicted Virginia would give Roosevelt and Garner a large margin and send an all Democratic delegation to Congress. The submarine with over 60 men aboard lies in 245 feet of water amid treacherous currents while authorities seek salvage help and a possible quick-loss scenario. One survivor claims doors failed during descent. The disaster cause remains unknown.
Lieut George F Miller of Company I Virginia National Guard is among 29 new recruits for the Virginia State Police. He will serve in the Winchester district to enforce road laws. Miller, son of Dr and Mrs E W Miller, previously excelled in a police training school at Virginia Beach and scored 93 percent on pistol range. Winchester now hosts two members of the white fleet.
Petitioners urged removal of curves on local highways Potters Hill and Hiett home Route 822 and a plan to consolidate road debts into single notes. The board authorized a month extra pay for road supervisor G M Carson to dispose of old machinery and referred the curve issue to Commonwealth Attorney Burr P Harrison for action with the State Highway Department. They also audited Carson’s road accounts, paid open claims, and ordered rebinding of county records with ongoing work expected to finish in years.
