Washington July 7 Paul V McNutt United States high commissioner to the Philippines said he would not contest the Democratic nomination if President Roosevelt seeks a third term He explained his plans assume Roosevelt does not run and added his loyalty would guide any action if Roosevelt does seek a third term He confirmed he would not run if Roosevelt runs in 1940.
The Chanters arrived in Winchester at 11:30 AM aboard the Baltimore and Ohio after a successful tour in New York. They performed Virginia Day selections at the Court of States and Temple of Religion, with four songs in the afternoon and a sacred concert in the evening before departing for home.
Miss Mary Wildon Hawke, sister of Mrs Thomas A. Gibson of Winchester, died at 426 West Clifford Street yesterday at 5 45 pm after a year long illness. She was 28, "of a prominent Philadelphia family," attended Bryn Mawr, and belonged to Old St. David's Church Wayne PA. Funeral at Old St. David's Church Wayne at 2 pm tomorrow.

Richmond Va July 7 4 Secretary of the Navy Claude A Swanson who died today at Rapidan Camp in the Blue Ridge was known as a U S senator and Virginia governor as well as head of the Navy during its peacetime program Martin A Hutchinson called him the Grand Old Man of Virginia Politics and praised his contributions Swanson served six terms in the U S House and was Virginia governor 1906 1910 before a 1910 Senate appointment and later Navy secretary in 1933 He helped reorganize state services under the 1902 constitution.
Middletown Virginia town council in special session votes first reading of an ordinance prohibiting Sunday grocery sales. Stores would only be allowed to open 6 to 8 a m to fulfill preordered perishables with penalties from two to ten dollars. Immediate effect upon final approval. Sidewalk projects on Main Street and Church Street discussed and speed limit signage planned with engineer requests.
Claude A. Swanson, 77, longtime public servant and secretary of the navy since 1933, died at 8:06 a.m. at Rapidan Camp in Virginia. The death followed a cerebral hemorrhage, with Roosevelt ordering national mourning and flags to fly at half staff. Swanson's career spanned Virginia governorship, 23 years in the Senate, and key roles in the Navy Department, with tributes from Roosevelt and Carter Glass.
