R A Grim, a veteran postal worker who retired last month, began on rural route 3 in 1905. He recalls horse transport, water hazards, and mail carried in a vest to open routes, plus no cars and a small Water Street post office. A mutilated message to the U S consulate says Rev Howard Smith of Washington Pa has been freed after kidnapping by General Ho Lung in Seechwan province. The plan by U S consul E O Clubb led to his release, though no direct word has come from Clubb. Smith was seized in May and ransom demanded including cash and medical supplies.
